Description
Hubert Lignier’s Morey-Saint-Denis Les Chafforts 1er Cru 2014 is a beautifully poised Pinot Noir from one of Morey’s most respected family domaines. It combines the site’s signature depth and mineral drive with the finesse and precision that make 2014 such a compelling Burgundy vintage. The result is a wine with immediate charm, yet clear room to evolve gracefully in bottle.
Tasting Notes
Bright medium red in the glass, with ripe aromas of raspberry, spice, and smoky, crushed-stone minerality. The bouquet is pure and expressive, hinting at both red fruit brightness and a subtle earthy complexity.
On the palate, it is silky on entry, then becomes savory and increasingly intense through the middle, with a fine-grained texture and a firm tannic backbone. The finish is long, mineral, and focused rather than heavy, giving the wine a sense of lift and tension. While already appealing now, it should gain further complexity and harmony with a few years of cellaring.
Production
Les Chafforts is a Premier Cru site in Morey-Saint-Denis, a commune known for giving Pinot Noir both structure and fragrance. Hubert Lignier farms with a strong respect for the land, avoiding pesticides and herbicides to preserve vine health and fruit purity, while the terroir’s limestone-driven character brings the wine its distinctive minerality and inner tension. The domaine’s traditional approach emphasizes ripe, healthy fruit and careful vinification to retain freshness, density, and precision.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs especially well with roasted duck, pigeon, game birds, mushroom dishes, and earthy preparations such as truffle pasta or veal with a light red-wine sauce. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if opening young, though a gentle decant is preferable to preserve its delicate aromatics.
Producer
Hubert Lignier is a historic family domaine founded in 1880, when Jacques Lignier began acquiring vines in Morey-Saint-Denis. Today the estate is run by Hubert and Laurent Lignier, who oversee around nine hectares across Bourgogne, village, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru levels, producing wines noted for depth, structure, and aging potential. The domaine has long been regarded as one of the benchmark producers in Morey-Saint-Denis, with a style that balances traditional craftsmanship with precision and elegance.
