Description
Hubert Lignier’s Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes 2014 is a beautifully judged Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir from some of the domaine’s oldest vines, with parcels dating back to 1936. It captures the classic elegance of Morey-Saint-Denis while adding remarkable depth, precision and mineral tension, making it a standout expression of premier cru Burgundy with serious ageing potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pinot Noir shows a vibrant, translucent ruby colour with the clarity and finesse you expect from top Burgundy. The bouquet is precise and mineral-driven, opening with crystalline red cherry, wild strawberry and subtle floral nuances, followed by a refined earthy edge and a whisper of spice.
The palate is medium-bodied yet impressively concentrated, with silky texture, vivid red fruit and a line of freshness that keeps everything taut and focused. The finish is harmonious, long and nuanced, supported by the old-vine concentration and low yields that give the wine both energy and depth. This is a wine that will reward cellaring and should continue to evolve gracefully over the next decade or more.
Production
The wine comes from old-vine premier cru parcels in Morey-Saint-Denis, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, where the soils and exposures bring a distinctive mix of depth, structure and mineral detail. Hubert Lignier farms the domaine with a clear respect for terroir, avoiding pesticides and herbicides to preserve vineyard health and fruit purity. Harvesting is focused on optimal ripeness and low yields, and the fruit is vinified in a traditional Burgundian style designed to retain freshness, precision and site expression.
Food & Serving
This wine is an excellent match for roast duck, pheasant, squab, game birds, mushroom dishes and delicately prepared lamb. It also works beautifully with truffle risotto or aged soft cheeses. Serve at around 16-18°C, and consider decanting for about 30-60 minutes if drinking young, to help the aromatics open and the texture soften.
Producer
Hubert Lignier is a historic family domaine founded in 1880, when Jacques Lignier began acquiring vines in Morey-Saint-Denis. Now into its fifth generation, the estate is recognized for producing deeply structured, age-worthy wines from roughly nine hectares across Burgundy, including village, premier cru and grand cru sites. Under Hubert and Laurent Lignier, the domaine has earned a strong reputation for traditional winemaking, concentration and purity, and the newer cellar in Morey-Saint-Denis reflects its continued commitment to quality.
