Description
From one of Morey-Saint-Denis’ most respected domaines, Hubert Lignier’s 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Blanchards is a precise, finely etched expression of Pinot Noir from a superbly placed premier cru. This wine brings together the domaine’s hallmark depth and structure with the lifted, classical profile of the 2021 vintage. Les Blanchards sits just below some of the village’s most famous vineyards, offering serious pedigree with a touch of approachability in its youth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Les Blanchards shows a vibrant, translucent ruby-red with garnet highlights at the rim. The nose opens delicately but with real complexity: wild red cherries, crushed raspberries and redcurrants, followed by rose petals, violets, and a subtle forest-floor note. Hints of orange zest, fine spice, and a gentle graphite minerality emerge with air, reflecting both terroir and sensitive élevage.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, wonderfully refined and tightly woven, with pure red fruit at its core—think sour cherry, red plum and cranberry—wrapped in fine, chalky tannins. The acidity is bright and linear, giving energy and lift, while a subtle oak framework adds notes of clove, tea leaf and a touch of cocoa without ever crowding the fruit. The finish is long, sapid and mineral, with a saline edge that invites another sip. Enjoyable after a short aeration even in the near term, it has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years in a good cellar, gaining more sous-bois, truffle and gamey complexity over time.
Production
Les Blanchards is a premier cru vineyard in Morey-Saint-Denis, lying on well-drained, limestone-rich soils with a mix of clay and small stones that naturally limit yields and emphasize finesse over power. The slightly cooler, ventilated exposition helped preserve freshness and aromatic detail in the classic, lower-yielding 2021 vintage. At Hubert Lignier, the vineyards are farmed with great respect for the soil and vine, typically using sustainable and largely organic methods, with careful green work to encourage even ripening. Grapes are picked by hand at optimal maturity, sorted rigorously in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification traditionally involves a proportion of whole clusters, depending on the year, to bring extra perfume and structure, followed by a gentle, temperature-controlled fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—often with a restrained percentage of new oak—to refine the tannins and add subtle complexity, before being bottled with minimal intervention to preserve purity and terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes that won’t overwhelm its finesse. Think roast duck with cherries, guinea fowl, herb-roasted chicken, veal tenderloin, or a simple côte de veau with mushrooms. It also marries beautifully with game birds, pigeon, and dishes featuring morels or truffles, as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté or a well-matured Tomme. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) in Burgundy stems to showcase the aromatics. For younger bottles, a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up; older bottles are best served directly from the bottle after a short rest upright to avoid disturbing the sediment.
Producer
Domaine Hubert Lignier is one of the benchmark producers of the Côte de Nuits, with a history that stretches back to the late 19th century and a reputation built on serious, age-worthy Burgundies. Based in Morey-Saint-Denis, the family domaine has been meticulously tended for generations, with Hubert and now his son Laurent at the helm, championing low yields, careful viticulture and traditional winemaking. The estate’s holdings span some of the most coveted terroirs in Morey and neighbouring villages, and their wines are prized for combining depth, structure and a clear sense of place. Over the years, Hubert Lignier has become a reference name for collectors and Burgundy lovers seeking authentic, terroir-driven Pinot Noir that can both charm in youth and reward long-term cellaring.
