Description
Hubert Lignier’s Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2014 is a finely etched expression of one of the Côte de Nuits’ most respected terroirs. Crafted from Pinot Noir in the traditional style for which the domaine is known, it combines depth, precision and elegance with the hallmark Grand Cru structure that promises impressive development in bottle.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deeply coloured, polished profile with a restrained, refined bouquet that unfolds gradually in the glass. Aromas of blackberry, limestone, dried blood and a subtle marine character lead into a compact, medium-bodied palate where fine tannins and striking linearity create a focused, almost architectural feel.
On the palate, the 2014 Clos de la Roche is dense yet controlled, with impressive length and a sense of energy that is still holding much of its fruit in reserve. This is a wine that is already beautifully composed, but its real reward will come with time, as its structure and complexity continue to open over the coming years.
Production
Hubert Lignier’s holdings are concentrated mainly in Morey-Saint-Denis, with additional parcels in Gevrey-Chambertin, Pommard and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The domaine works in a traditional Burgundy style, avoiding pesticides and herbicides to preserve healthy soils and pure fruit expression, while each site contributes its own distinct imprint to the wines. Clos de la Roche, with its Grand Cru stature and mineral-driven character, gives this bottling its depth, tension and long ageing potential.
Food & Serving
Best served at around 16–18°C and ideally given some air before drinking; a careful decant is recommended if opening young. It pairs beautifully with fine game birds, roast duck, mushroom dishes, lamb, venison and aged hard cheeses, where the wine’s finesse and structure can fully shine.
Producer
The Hubert Lignier estate dates back to 1880, when Jacques Lignier first acquired vines in Morey-Saint-Denis. Now run by Hubert Lignier and his son Laurent, the family domaine spans around 9 hectares and produces a wide range of wines across Bourgogne, village, premier cru and grand cru levels. Known for wines of depth, concentration and elegance, Hubert Lignier is regarded as one of the benchmark traditional producers of the Côte de Nuits.
