Description
Hosanna 2020 is a plush, sun‑drenched expression of top‑flight Pomerol, offering an opulent yet impeccably tailored take on Right Bank Bordeaux. It stands out for its generous, modern fruit profile and polished structure, often drawing comparison to high‑end Napa Cabernet while remaining distinctly Bordeaux at heart. Crafted in very limited quantities from prime vineyards on the Pomerol plateau, this vintage continues the estate’s reputation for producing some of the appellation’s most sensual, hedonistic reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Hosanna 2020 shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple hue, almost opaque at the core, promising concentration and depth. The nose is lavish and expressive, with intense aromas of berry liqueur, ripe black cherries and plums, layered with fig, licorice, star anise and a touch of sweet smoke and fine cigar ash.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, with a rich, gourmand core of confit dark fruit. Silky, polished tannins frame flavors of macerated blackberries, cocoa, licorice and warm baking spices, giving a seamless, creamy mouthfeel. Despite its generosity, the wine retains an elegant line and a long, suave finish marked by smoky, spicy nuances. This is a vintage built to age: it will offer great pleasure in its youth after a good decant, but should develop additional complexity and tertiary notes over 12–25 years in a proper cellar.
Production
Château Hosanna lies on the prized central plateau of Pomerol, where deep gravel and clay soils, underlain by an iron-rich subsoil (crasse de fer), produce Merlot and Cabernet Franc of remarkable depth and perfume. The grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, ensuring only perfectly healthy, concentrated fruit reaches the winery. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to preserve the wine’s natural richness and fine tannin texture. The 2020 was then matured in French oak barriques, a high proportion of them new, which adds subtle notes of spice, toast and smoke while maintaining balance and elegance.
Food & Serving
Hosanna 2020 is a luxurious partner for refined, richly flavored dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, dry‑aged ribeye, venison with a red‑wine reduction, or classic French fare such as duck breast, veal sweetbreads and truffled poultry. It also pairs beautifully with earthy sides like mushroom fricassée, celery root purée or dishes featuring black truffle, and can be enjoyed with aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and silkiness. Decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to allow the bouquet to open and the tannins to soften; older bottles (10+ years) will need gentler, shorter decanting mainly to remove sediment.
Producer
Château Hosanna is a relatively young estate by Bordeaux standards, created in 1999 when the legendary négociant and winegrower Établissements Jean‑Pierre Moueix acquired and restructured vineyards from the former Château Certan Giraud. Despite its modern inception, it draws on parcels historically recognized as some of Pomerol’s best, neighboring icons like Vieux Château Certan and Petrus. Under Moueix stewardship, Hosanna has quickly become one of the appellation’s stars, celebrated for its seductive, Merlot‑driven wines that combine density, aromatic intensity and finesse. Consistently high critical praise and strong demand from collectors around the world have cemented Hosanna’s status as a benchmark modern Pomerol.
