Description

Hosanna 2009 is a quintessential Pomerol from an exceptional Bordeaux vintage, offering depth, opulence and remarkable aging potential. This is a richly concentrated, plum‑laden red that captures the lush, velvety side of Right Bank Bordeaux while retaining a precise, mineral backbone. For collectors and serious Bordeaux lovers, it’s a wine that is still evolving and promises even greater complexity in the years ahead. With 97 points from Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider), Hosanna 2009 has earned its place among the standout wines of the vintage. Its hallmark is the interplay of dark fruit richness with savory, truffle‑tinged nuance, delivering a layered, unmistakably Pomerol expression that is both indulgent and refined. Although still youthful, it already shows the pedigree and structure of a wine built for long-term cellaring, rooted in one of Bordeaux’s most prized terroirs.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Hosanna 2009 shows a medium to deep garnet color with a dense, almost opaque core, reflecting both its concentration and its stage of evolution. The rim is just beginning to show subtle maturity, but the overall impression is still youthful and vibrant. The nose is dark, brooding and complex, opening with black plum compote, blackberry conserve and blackcurrant cordial. With time in the glass, layers of smoke, truffle, espresso bean and dark chocolate emerge, alongside hints of graphite pencil shavings, laurel leaf, beef jus and wild mushrooms. It’s both hedonistic and savory, with aromatic detail that continues to unfurl. On the palate, this is full‑bodied and richly textured, with a lush, almost plush mid‑palate packed with ripe black plums, black cherries and cassis. A firm, slightly chewy tannic frame gives structure and drive, balanced by well‑integrated acidity that keeps the wine fresh despite its generosity. Beneath the fruit lies a tapestry of earthy and spicy tones—iron, forest floor, cocoa, roasted coffee and sweet spices—leading to a long, iron‑tinged, savory finish. The wine remains youthful for its age and is still on an upward trajectory. It can be enjoyed now with a proper decant, but it will continue to gain complexity and refinement over the next decade or more, rewarding cellaring for at least another 8–12 years, and likely longer in optimal conditions.

Production
Château Hosanna is located in the heart of Pomerol, on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where Merlot thrives on a patchwork of gravel, clay and iron‑rich subsoils that give the wines their distinctive depth and mineral, almost ferrous character. The estate’s prime parcels sit on some of the appellation’s best-exposed gravels, with old vines rooted deeply into the underlying ‘crasse de fer’—the iron-rich layer that is often cited as a signature of great Pomerol terroir. Harvesting is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are selected in a vintage as generous as 2009. In the cellar, the wine is vinified with great care to preserve fruit purity and extract fine, polished tannins—typically with temperature‑controlled fermentation in vats, followed by élevage in French oak barrels, a significant portion of which are new. The result is a wine that marries concentration and opulence with structure and complexity, tailored for long aging.

Food & Serving
Hosanna 2009 is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes that mirror its depth and texture. Think classic roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, slow‑braised beef short ribs, duck breast with a red wine reduction, or venison with a truffle jus. It also pairs beautifully with earthy flavors—wild mushroom ragout, truffle risotto, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté or matured Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. For current drinking, decant for 1.5–3 hours to let the wine fully open and integrate its dark fruit, oak and earthy nuances; older, well‑cellared bottles may require a slightly shorter, more gentle decant to preserve their more delicate tertiary notes.

Producer
Château Hosanna is one of Pomerol’s younger but highly regarded stars, established under its current identity when it was acquired and reimagined by the Moueix family—who are also behind some of the Right Bank’s greatest names. Despite its relatively recent rebirth, the vineyards themselves sit on historically prized land, once part of some of Pomerol’s most esteemed crus, and today Hosanna is widely recognized for crafting deeply expressive, Merlot‑driven wines of both power and finesse. Its small size and exceptional terroir have made it a sought‑after, boutique estate within Bordeaux, with vintages like 2009 underscoring its status as a leading voice in modern Pomerol and a reference point for collectors seeking concentrated yet elegant Right Bank wines.
