Description
Heymann-Löwenstein’s Riesling Uhlen Blaufüsser Lay Großes Gewächs comes from one of the Mosel’s most dramatic terraced sites, where steep slate slopes and old vines produce wines of striking mineral character. Classified as a VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS, it represents the estate’s most distinguished dry Rieslings and showcases the distinctive geology of the lower Mosel.
Tasting Notes
The available vintage reference describes a beautifully expressive Riesling with aromas of ripe pear and yellow apple, complemented by a juicy, generous fruit profile. Beneath the ripe orchard-fruit character lies the firm, stony impression associated with the blue-grey Devonian slate of the Blaufüsser Lay parcel. The wine’s structure, old-vine concentration and mineral backbone suggest excellent potential for further development in bottle, although the definitive tasting profile of the 2024 vintage is yet to be published.
Production
The Blaufüsser Lay is a parcel within the Uhlen vineyard, extending across the villages of Winningen and Kobern-Gondorf on the Terrassenmosel. Its name refers to the blue-grey slate—“Lay” being an old term for slate—with a relatively high clay content. Riesling vines are up to 60 years old, with many planted on their own roots, and are harvested by hand from slopes reaching up to an exceptional 170% gradient. Fermentation takes place spontaneously, followed by maturation in a 2,400-litre oak cask, without the addition of enzymes or fining agents.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 10–12°C to allow the wine’s fruit, texture and slate-driven minerality to unfold. It is a natural partner for freshwater fish, shellfish, roast poultry, pork and refined vegetable dishes, while its acidity also works well with creamy sauces and lightly spiced Asian cuisine. Decanting is not essential, but a brief 20–30 minutes of aeration can help reveal the wine’s aromatic depth; older bottles may benefit from careful decanting if sediment is present.
Producer
Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein is a VDP estate based in the lower Mosel, with a strong focus on expressive Rieslings from steep terraced vineyards. The winery is particularly associated with site-driven wines that highlight the region’s varied slate soils, including the highly regarded Uhlen vineyard. Its meticulous hand harvesting, spontaneous fermentations and restrained cellar work allow the character of each individual parcel to remain at the centre of the finished wine.
