Description

Henri Bonneau’s Les Rouliers NV Lot 2024 in magnum format is a rare opportunity to experience the legendary Châteauneuf-du-Pape traditionalist in a more approachable, but still deeply characterful, guise. Bottled as a non‑vintage Vin de France, Les Rouliers is typically drawn from declassified barrels and neighboring parcels, offering a window into Bonneau’s unmistakable style at a more relaxed, bistro-friendly level. In true Bonneau fashion, this Rhône red is all about soul, texture and complexity rather than polish or modern sheen.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Les Rouliers shows a deep, slightly hazy ruby to garnet hue, reflecting its traditional, minimally filtered upbringing. The nose is immediately evocative and wildly Rhône: sun‑warmed red and black cherries, dried strawberry, garrigue herbs (thyme, rosemary, lavender), leather, cured meat and a touch of black olive and spice. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a supple, almost velvety texture, supported by ripe but gently rustic tannins. Flavors of macerated red berries, plum and kirsch intertwine with savory notes of earth, tobacco, pepper and dried flowers. There’s a natural warmth and generosity, balanced by a subtle, old-vine freshness that keeps the finish long and moreish rather than heavy. While designed to be enjoyed on the earlier side compared with Bonneau’s grander cuvées, this magnum has the stuffing to develop gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining further tertiary complexity with time in the cellar.

Production
Les Rouliers is assembled from various parcels in and around Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the Southern Rhône, often including declassified lots that did not make it into Henri Bonneau’s flagship cuvées but still carry his unmistakable stamp. The terroir is classic southern Rhône, with a mix of galets roulés (rounded river stones), sandy and clay-limestone soils that lend both ripeness and underlying structure. Harvesting is traditionally done by hand, allowing careful selection of bunches in the vineyard. In keeping with Bonneau’s famously old-school methods, fermentation takes place in concrete or old vessels with native yeasts, followed by an extended élevage in well‑seasoned foudres and older barrels. Minimal interventions and low filtration preserve texture, aromatic depth and the authentic, slightly wild character of the wine.

Food & Serving
Les Rouliers is ideally suited to hearty, rustic dishes that echo its Rhône origins: think herb‑roasted lamb, duck confit, cassoulet, grilled sausages, braised beef or game bird with root vegetables. It also works beautifully with mushroom‑based dishes, slow-cooked ragùs and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F); in magnum format, the wine benefits from a bit of air, so decanting 30–60 minutes before serving helps open up the aromatics and smooth the tannins, especially if enjoyed in its youth.

Producer
Henri Bonneau was one of the most revered and idiosyncratic growers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, known for his tiny cellar, meticulous work in the vineyards and unwavering commitment to traditional methods. Over several decades, he crafted some of the most sought‑after wines in the Southern Rhône, often released only when he felt they were ready, regardless of convention. His wines are celebrated for their profound complexity, longevity and uniquely soulful expression of Grenache and Rhône terroir. Today, bottles bearing the Henri Bonneau name are cherished by enthusiasts worldwide, and cuvées like Les Rouliers provide a rare chance to experience the house style in a more accessible and immediate form, while still carrying the legacy of one of the region’s true vinfokæmpere—a genuine “wine champion.”
