Description
Henri Bonneau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Marie Beurrier 2019 is one of the Rhône’s most sought-after traditional reds, made in minuscule quantities and released only when the family believes the wine is truly ready. This cuvée, named after Henri’s mother, represents a more supple and approachable expression of the domaine’s legendary style, while retaining the depth and complexity that collectors prize. In a region filled with prestigious names, Marie Beurrier stands out for its old-vine Grenache, long élevage in old casks, and an almost Burgundian sense of finesse layered over classic Châteauneuf power.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Marie Beurrier shows a deep ruby to garnet core with a slightly translucent rim, hinting at its finesse rather than sheer mass. The nose is intensely aromatic and layered: lifted notes of kirsch, wild strawberries, and black cherry mingle with Provençal garrigue, dried thyme, lavender, and hints of blood orange zest. With air, more savoury nuances emerge—smoked meat, leather, black olive, dried rose petals, licorice, and a subtle gamey undertone that is a hallmark of the Bonneau style.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably silky, with a glycerol texture that wraps ripe red and black fruits in fine, chalky tannins. Flavours of cherry liqueur, plum, and raspberry compote are balanced by spice—white pepper, anise, and clove—and a savoury, earthy complexity reminiscent of dried mushrooms and warm stones. The acidity is vibrant for Châteauneuf, giving lift and precision to the finish, which is long, resonant, and gently saline. This 2019 has the structure and concentration to develop beautifully for 15–25 years in a good cellar, gradually gaining more tertiary notes of truffle, tobacco, and forest floor while keeping its core of sweet fruit.
Production
Cuvée Marie Beurrier is sourced from some of the domaine’s oldest Grenache-dominant parcels in the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, rooted in a mix of sandy soils and clay-limestone with scattered galets roulés. The sand lends finesse and aromatic lift, while the clay and stones give depth and power. Harvesting is done by hand, with ruthless selection in the vineyard to retain only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches. In keeping with Henri Bonneau’s traditional philosophy, the grapes are typically fermented with a high proportion of whole clusters in concrete, using native yeasts and long macerations to draw out complexity rather than brute extraction. The wine then undergoes an extended élevage—often several years—in a patchwork of very old barrels and foudres, with minimal racking and no new oak, allowing slow oxidation and integration while preserving the authentic character of the fruit and terroir.
Food & Serving
This is a natural match for richly flavoured, slow-cooked dishes and game. Think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, Provençal daube of beef, braised venison, duck with cherries, or game birds with wild mushrooms. It also shines with truffle-infused dishes, aged hard cheeses, and hearty vegetable stews based on tomato, olive, and herbs. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); if drinking young, decant 2–3 hours in advance to allow the aromatics and texture to fully unfurl. Older bottles should be decanted gently just before serving to remove sediment while preserving their evolved bouquet.
Producer
Henri Bonneau was one of the legendary traditionalists of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, crafting wines in tiny quantities that became cult classics among Rhône enthusiasts worldwide. From his modest cellars in the village, he quietly produced some of the region’s most soulful and long-lived Grenache-based wines, often ageing them far longer in old wood than his neighbours before release. The domaine’s importance in the Southern Rhône is hard to overstate: Bonneau demonstrated that Châteauneuf-du-Pape could marry power with nuance and almost Burgundian complexity, inspiring a generation of winemakers to respect old vines and patient élevage. Today, the family continues to steward his legacy, maintaining the same artisan methods, tiny production, and unwavering commitment to authenticity that have made cuvées like Réserve des Célestins and Marie Beurrier among the most revered bottles in the appellation.
