Description
Henri Bonneau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Marie Beurrier 2018 is one of those wines that serious Rhône lovers seek out, cellar, and open only on special occasions. Sourced from some of the estate’s finest old-vine parcels, it marries depth, warmth, and wild Provençal character in a style that is unmistakably traditional. Named after a beloved family member, Marie Beurrier is a more approachable cousin to the legendary Réserve des Célestins, yet it still carries all the soul and gravitas that made Henri Bonneau a benchmark name in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2018 shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with garnet reflections toward the rim, hinting at its concentration and future development. The nose is immediately seductive: ripe red and black cherries, macerated strawberries, and plum compote unfold alongside garrigue herbs, dried thyme, and lavender, with layers of sweet spice, leather, and a touch of cured meat and warm earth emerging as it opens.
On the palate, Cuvée Marie Beurrier is rich and mouth-filling yet surprisingly lifted for such a powerful Southern Rhône red. Juicy Grenache fruit leads, with notes of kirsch, black raspberry, and wild strawberry, wrapped in fine, velvety tannins. Hints of licorice, tapenade, cracked pepper, and dried roses add complexity, while a savory, mineral edge keeps the wine from ever feeling heavy. The finish is long and persistent, echoing spice, herbs, and red fruit. While already expressive in its youth, this 2018 has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully for 10–20 years in a good cellar, gaining more tertiary notes of truffle, game, and dried fig over time.
Production
Cuvée Marie Beurrier is crafted from old-vine Grenache at its core, complemented by small amounts of traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape varieties such as Mourvèdre and Syrah, grown on classic Rhône terroirs of galets roulés (rounded river stones), sand, and clay around Châteauneuf-du-Pape. These soils, combined with the mistral wind and abundant Mediterranean sunshine, yield grapes of superb ripeness and concentration while preserving freshness. Harvesting is done by hand, with strict sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit makes it into the cellar. True to the Bonneau philosophy, vinification is resolutely traditional: long, slow fermentations and extended élevage in large, old foudres and neutral barrels, with minimal intervention. This patient, old-school approach allows the wine to develop its layered aromatics and silky texture naturally, rather than being shaped by new oak or modern techniques.
Food & Serving
This is a superb table wine for hearty, flavor-packed dishes. Think roast lamb studded with garlic and rosemary, slow-braised beef daube Provençale, duck confit, or game birds with wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses, charcuterie, and rustic vegetable dishes like ratatouille or grilled eggplant with olive tapenade. For best enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Young bottles benefit from a gentle decant of 1–2 hours to allow the wine to stretch and reveal its full aromatic complexity; older bottles should be decanted more carefully, mainly to remove sediment, and enjoyed soon after opening.
Producer
Henri Bonneau is one of the most revered and traditional names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a small, family-run estate that has achieved almost cult status among collectors and sommeliers. Over multiple generations, the Bonneau family has farmed some of the appellation’s finest parcels, becoming known for their patient, artisanal approach and incredibly long-lived wines. Henri himself, who passed away in 2016, was famed for his meticulous attention to detail, long cellar aging, and refusal to compromise on quality or style. Today, the domaine continues to uphold his philosophy, producing wines that are unmistakably old-school Châteauneuf-du-Pape—profound, soulful, and deeply rooted in the region’s history. Cuvée Marie Beurrier, alongside Réserve des Célestins, stands as one of the estate’s most sought-after bottlings and a reference point for traditional Rhône enthusiasts.
