Description
Henri Bonneau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Marie Beurrier 2017 in magnum is a rare and highly sought-after expression from one of the Rhône Valley’s most legendary traditionalists. Bottled in 1.5L, this cuvée offers both depth and longevity, capturing the soul of old-school Châteauneuf with remarkable finesse. Named after a family member, Marie Beurrier is typically more approachable in its youth than Bonneau’s fabled Réserve des Célestins, yet still built for long-term cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Marie Beurrier shows a deep, luminous ruby to garnet core with a slightly translucent rim that hints at its finesse-driven style rather than sheer extraction. The nose is complex and layered: ripe red and black cherries, raspberry compote, and wild strawberries mingle with Provençal garrigue, dried thyme, lavender, leather, and a touch of black olive, licorice, and warm earth. With air, more subtle notes of dried rose petals, game, and baking spices emerge.
On the palate, this cuvée is rich yet beautifully balanced, with a silky, enveloping texture and that trademark Bonneau combination of power and grace. Expect concentrated red and dark berry fruit framed by fine-grained tannins, lively but integrated acidity, and savory undertones of tobacco, sous-bois, and spice. The finish is long, warming, and deeply persistent, echoing sweet herbs and mineral notes. In magnum, the 2017 has excellent aging potential—easily 15–25 years from vintage, evolving toward even more earth, truffle, and gamey complexity with time.
Production
Cuvée Marie Beurrier is sourced from some of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s finest terroirs, dominated by old-vine Grenache planted on classic galets roulés (rounded river stones), sandy plots, and limestone-clay soils that together contribute both ripeness and finesse. The blend is primarily Grenache with small amounts of Mourvèdre, Syrah, and other permitted local varieties, all harvested by hand at optimal ripeness. In keeping with Henri Bonneau’s famously traditional methods, the grapes are usually only partially destemmed and undergo a long, slow fermentation in concrete and old vats, followed by extended aging—often several years—in large, neutral foudres and old barrels. There is no pursuit of modern polish here: minimal intervention, long élevage, and patient blending create a wine of profound character and authenticity.
Food & Serving
This is a superb partner for richly flavored, rustic, and slow-cooked dishes: think braised lamb shoulder with rosemary, daube Provençale, game birds, venison, beef cheeks, or hearty stews with root vegetables and mushrooms. It also shines alongside aged hard cheeses and dishes featuring truffle, olive, or Mediterranean herbs. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given the concentration and youthfulness of the 2017, especially in magnum, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl and the tannins to soften.
Producer
Henri Bonneau was one of the most revered names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, emblematic of an era when wines were made slowly, traditionally, and with unwavering respect for terroir. Working from a small cellar in the village, Bonneau built a near-mythical reputation for crafting deeply soulful, long-lived Grenache-based wines through meticulous vineyard work, tiny yields, and extremely long aging in old casks. His cuvées—especially Réserve des Célestins and Marie Beurrier—are now benchmarks of the appellation and highly prized by collectors worldwide. Today, the legacy continues through the family, and bottles bearing the Henri Bonneau name remain some of the Rhône’s most distinctive and coveted expressions.
