Description
Henri Bonneau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Marie Beurrier 2014 in magnum format is a classic, old-school expression of the Southern Rhône’s most storied appellation. Produced in tiny quantities and highly sought after by collectors, this cuvée offers a beautifully spicy, Burgundian elegance rather than sheer power. The 2014 vintage, bottled as a single cuvée, showcases the domaine’s uncanny ability to excel in so‑called “lesser” years, backed by a strong 92–94/100 rating from critic Jeb Dunnuck.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Marie Beurrier shows a medium to deep ruby hue with a slight garnet rim beginning to form, hinting at its early maturity while promising further evolution. The nose is complex and layered: sweet and savoury spice, garrigue herbs, dried rose petals, red and black cherries, kirsch, and hints of leather, smoked tea, and warm earth. There’s a distinctly lifted, almost Burgundian perfume that makes you want to keep going back to the glass.
On the palate, this wine leans into finesse over sheer weight, with medium body, fine-grained tannins and beautifully integrated acidity that keeps everything fresh and precise. Flavours echo the nose—red cherry, raspberry liqueur, plum skin, and wild strawberry—woven with notes of white pepper, star anise, dried thyme, and a subtle gamey nuance. The texture is silky yet structured, with a long, savoury finish that leaves impressions of spice and dried herbs. In magnum, this 2014 has excellent aging potential: it’s already drinking very well but should continue to develop greater tertiary complexity over the next 10–15 years, depending on storage.
Production
Cuvée Marie Beurrier is sourced primarily from old-vine parcels in some of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s finest terroirs, including the famed La Crau plateau, where vines dig deep into a mix of rolled river stones (galets roulés), sand and clay over limestone. These soils, coupled with the mistral winds and abundant Mediterranean sunshine, naturally temper yields and concentrate flavour. The blend is based predominantly on Grenache, with small amounts of traditional Rhône varieties such as Mourvèdre and Syrah, all harvested by hand at optimal ripeness. In keeping with Henri Bonneau’s traditionalist philosophy, fermentation occurs in old tanks with native yeasts, followed by an extended, patient élevage in well-seasoned foudres and old barrels. There is minimal intervention and no rush to bottle, allowing the wine to harmonise slowly and express the house’s unmistakable, time-honoured style.
Food & Serving
This 2014 Marie Beurrier is a superb match for refined yet flavourful dishes such as slow-braised lamb shoulder with rosemary, duck confit, roast game birds, or a classic Provençal daube. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom ragout, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at around 16–18°C (61–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth or mid-maturity, to let the wine fully unfurl its layers of spice, fruit and savoury nuance—particularly important with the magnum format.
Producer
Henri Bonneau is one of the legendary, almost mythical names of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, known for producing some of the region’s most soulful and age-worthy wines from a tiny, traditionally run cellar. The Bonneau family has been cultivating vines in the appellation for generations, and Henri himself was famed for his intuitive, hands-on approach and refusal to follow passing trends. His wines, especially the rare cuvées such as Réserve des Célestins and Marie Beurrier, have achieved near-cult status among enthusiasts and collectors, often ranking among the finest expressions of Grenache in the world. Today, the domaine’s reputation endures as a benchmark for classic, old-world Châteauneuf-du-Pape—wines that speak clearly of their terroir, their vintage, and the uncompromising craftsmanship behind them.
