Description

Hennessy XO is one of the world’s benchmark XO cognacs, renowned for its power, depth and velvety complexity. First created in 1870 for Maurice Hennessy’s personal circle of friends, it defined the ‘Extra Old’ style and remains a reference point for discerning spirit lovers. Composed from over 100 carefully selected eaux-de-vie, some aged for decades, Hennessy XO offers a richly layered drinking experience that rewards slow contemplation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Hennessy XO shows a deep, burnished amber hue with copper and mahogany highlights, signaling its long maturation in oak. The nose is generous and expressive, with notes of candied orange peel, dark dried fruits, cocoa, toasted oak and gentle spice, evolving into nuances of leather, tobacco leaf and vanilla. On the palate it is full-bodied and opulent, yet impeccably balanced. Flavors of figs, prunes and dates unfold alongside dark chocolate, roasted coffee, cinnamon, clove and a hint of black pepper. The texture is mouth-coating and silky, with a long, warming finish that lingers on sweet spice, rancio (nutty, oxidative cognac character) and subtle wood tones. While Hennessy XO is bottled ready to enjoy, it is remarkably stable and can be kept for many years without losing its character, provided the bottle is well stored away from light and heat.

Production
Hennessy XO is crafted in the Cognac region of France from Ugni Blanc grapes grown on chalk- and limestone-rich soils that lend freshness and structure to the base wines. After harvest, the wines are traditionally double-distilled in copper pot stills to produce clear eaux-de-vie, which are then aged separately in French oak barrels, some for decades. The cellar masters at Hennessy draw from more than 100 eaux-de-vie, many from the Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois crus, blending them to achieve the house’s signature XO style of depth, harmony and extended, spicy richness.

Food & Serving
Hennessy XO is best enjoyed neat in a tulip-shaped glass at a cool room temperature, around 18–20°C, to allow the layers of aroma to unfold gradually. A short rest in the glass or a gentle ‘mini-decant’ into a cognac snifter helps open its bouquet. It pairs beautifully with high-cocoa dark chocolate, roasted or caramelized nuts, aged hard cheeses, and refined desserts such as crème brûlée or tarte Tatin. For a more savory experience, enjoy it alongside foie gras, game terrines or a fine cigar, where its spice, dried-fruit and woody notes will find a natural echo.

Producer
Founded in 1765 by Irishman Richard Hennessy, Hennessy has grown into one of the most influential and widely recognized cognac houses in the world. Based in the town of Cognac on the Charente River, the house has been instrumental in defining quality standards and stylistic benchmarks for the entire region. Hennessy’s long line of cellar masters, all from the Fillioux family for over eight generations, has ensured remarkable consistency and craftsmanship. Hennessy XO, created in 1870, became an icon of the ‘Extra Old’ category and remains a flagship cuvée that showcases the house’s unparalleled reserves of aged eaux-de-vie and its mastery of blending.
