Description
Heitz Wine Cellars Lot C-91 2017 is a beautifully classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, built from fruit sourced across some of Oakville, Rutherford, and Howell Mountain’s most characterful sites. First envisioned by Joe Heitz in 1969 as a wine that would express the estate rather than a single vineyard, it remains a benchmark for elegance, freshness, and site-driven complexity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, inviting color and an aromatic profile that is both lifted and refined. The nose opens with red plum, blueberry, smoky meat, sage, rosemary, black pepper, and a touch of chocolate, giving it a distinctive herbal-spiced Napa character.
The palate is intense yet graceful, with silky fruit framed by a lively, precise structure. Layers of dark and red fruit unfold smoothly before a long, lightly herbal finish, and while it is already impressive, the wine has the balance and backbone to age well over the coming years.
Production
The fruit comes from multiple sustainably farmed parcels in Western Oakville, Eastern Rutherford, and Southeast Howell Mountain, bringing together different expressions of Napa terroir in a single cuvée. The grapes were harvested with care to preserve purity and freshness, then fermented and matured for 9 months in a combination of new and used French oak, allowing the wine to retain its estate identity while gaining subtle complexity.
Food & Serving
This Cabernet Sauvignon is a natural match for grilled ribeye, roast lamb, braised short ribs, or wild mushrooms with earthy herbs. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to let the aromatics open fully and the structure soften.
Producer
Heitz Wine Cellars was founded in 1961 by Joe and Alice Heitz and has long stood among Napa Valley’s most important historic estates. Known for an unusually traditional winemaking style that has remained largely unchanged for decades, the winery is celebrated for producing Cabernet Sauvignon with freshness, poise, and aging potential rather than sheer weight. Since the 2018 acquisition by Gaylon Lawrence, the estate has entered a new phase of refinement while staying true to the classic Heitz identity.
