Description
Heitz Wine Cellars’ Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is one of Napa Valley’s most iconic single-vineyard wines, first made famous by helping define the region’s rise to world-class status. The 2010 vintage comes from the legendary Oakville site and shows the house style at its most classic: refined, structured, and built with remarkable patience.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep garnet color that hints at its concentration and age. The nose opens with red and dark cherry, blackcurrant, clove, mint, and subtle eucalyptus, with time revealing more savoury notes of smoke and blood orange.
The palate is layered and intense, yet notably graceful, with excellent freshness, firm but polished tannins, and a rounded mid-palate that speaks to careful élevage. This is a wine with serious aging potential; while already expressive, it is clearly built for further cellaring and will continue to evolve beautifully over time.
Production
Martha’s Vineyard sits in the Oakville AVA, sheltered by the Mayacamas Mountains and rooted in gravelly soils that are particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The fruit is handled with a traditional, slow approach at the estate, including extended maturation in large neutral American oak before time in new French oak and additional bottle aging, allowing the wine to develop depth without losing its signature freshness and tension.
Food & Serving
This Cabernet Sauvignon is a natural match for prime rib, grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, venison, or truffle-infused dishes. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours if drinking now, especially to allow the wine’s aromatic complexity and structure to open fully.
Producer
Founded in 1961 by Joe and Alice Heitz, Heitz Wine Cellars is one of Napa Valley’s true benchmark estates and a pioneer of single-vineyard Cabernet in the region. Martha’s Vineyard, first bottled in 1966, became one of Napa’s most historic and recognizable wines, celebrated for its distinctive minty, elegant profile. Today the winery remains a reference point for classical Napa Cabernet and continues to carry that legacy forward with quiet confidence.
