Description
Heitz Wine Cellars Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is one of Napa Valley’s most legendary single-vineyard wines, combining classic structure, lifted freshness, and unmistakable site character. First released in 1966, it helped define what serious Napa Cabernet could be, and the 2004 vintage continues that legacy with remarkable depth and elegance.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep garnet hue, signaling both concentration and maturity. The bouquet is layered and expressive, with red and black cherry, cassis, clove, and Heitz’s signature notes of mint and eucalyptus.
On the palate, it is full-bodied yet polished, with intense dark fruit, firm structure, and a rounded, seamless texture. There is excellent balance between richness and freshness, and the finish is long, focused, and complex. This wine has the concentration to age beautifully for many more years, developing greater nuance with time in bottle.
Production
Martha’s Vineyard sits in the Oakville AVA, protected by the Mayacamas Mountains and planted on gravel-rich soils that are ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is made in a notably traditional style: fermentation is followed by a year in neutral oak, then three years in 100% new French oak, and finally a year resting in bottle before release, allowing the wine to integrate slowly and preserve its classic character.
Food & Serving
This Cabernet pairs beautifully with grilled ribeye, roast lamb, venison, braised short ribs, or hard aged cheeses such as Comté or aged cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if opening now, especially to allow the wine’s aromatics and structure to fully open.
Producer
Founded in 1961 by Joe and Alice Heitz, Heitz Wine Cellars is one of the true icons of Napa Valley and a benchmark producer for old-school Cabernet Sauvignon. Martha’s Vineyard became its flagship single-vineyard bottling with the 1966 vintage, helping establish the estate as a pioneer of site-specific Napa wines. Now under new ownership since 2018, the winery continues to honor its historic identity while refining precision and detail across the range.
