Description

Heinrich Muscat Freyheit Bio 2022 is a characterful, naturally crafted white blend from Burgenland that showcases Muskat Ottonel and Pinot Blanc (Weißburgunder) at their most expressive. Certified organic and made with a minimalist touch in the cellar, it delivers a vivid, almost perfumed freshness without sacrificing precision or dryness. The “Freyheit” line from Weingut Heinrich has become a benchmark for Austria’s new wave of skin-contact and low‑intervention whites, capturing both regional identity and a sense of adventure in the glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Muscat Freyheit 2022 typically shows a pale to medium straw hue, often with a faint golden or slightly hazy tint due to its gentle, low‑intervention handling and minimal filtration. On the nose, expect an aromatic burst reminiscent of a summer picnic: meadow flowers and elderflower mingle with notes of passion fruit, grapefruit zest, kumquat and ripe citrus, underpinned by delicate herbal and spicy nuances. The palate is bone‑dry and finely textured, balancing the floral lift of Muskat Ottonel with the structure and quiet elegance of Pinot Blanc. Juicy exotic fruit, citrus peel and stone fruit are layered with subtle savory tones that can recall curry leaf, fennel seed, ginger and a hint of miso-like umami. A gentle, refined creaminess wraps around a core of bright acidity and a lightly bitter, spicy finish that adds grip and refreshment. Enjoy it now for its energy and aromatic intensity, or over the next 3–5 years as the spice and savory dimensions gain further complexity.

Production
The grapes for Muscat Freyheit Bio 2022 come from organically farmed vineyards in Burgenland, around Lake Neusiedl, where warm Pannonian influences meet cooler evening breezes. Soils of limestone, clay, loam and patches of schist contribute both ripeness and a distinct mineral backbone to the fruit. Heinrich harvests by hand to ensure optimal selection in the vineyard, bringing in Muskat Ottonel and Weißburgunder at balanced ripeness rather than overt opulence. In the cellar, the must typically undergoes spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, often with a short period of skin contact to build texture and aromatic complexity. The wine is then matured in neutral vessels (such as used oak or large casks) on its fine lees, with minimal intervention, gentle handling, and very limited, if any, fining or filtration, in keeping with the “Freyheit” philosophy of transparency and purity.

Food & Serving
This distinctive white pairs beautifully with fragrant, spice‑driven cuisine: think Thai or Vietnamese dishes with lemongrass and ginger, light curries, and Japanese-inspired small plates. It’s also excellent with fresh goat’s cheese, semi‑soft cheeses, grilled vegetables, ceviche, sushi, or aromatic salads featuring citrus, herbs and fresh fruit. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 10–12 °C (50–54 °F) to allow the floral and spicy notes to fully express themselves. A brief decant of 15–30 minutes can help the wine open up and smooth out its spicy, slightly pithy edge, especially in its youth.

Producer
Weingut Heinrich, based in Gols in Burgenland, is one of Austria’s most respected and pioneering estates, especially known for its early and committed shift to biodynamic and low‑intervention viticulture. Founded as a family winery, Heinrich has grown from a regional insider’s tip into an international reference for terroir‑driven reds and distinctive, naturally made whites. The estate’s vineyards around Lake Neusiedl benefit from a unique climate and diverse soils, which Heinrich seeks to express through minimal cellar manipulation and careful work in the vines. The “Freyheit” range embodies their most exploratory spirit, embracing wild ferments, skin contact and minimal sulfur, and has garnered a loyal following among sommeliers and wine lovers looking for authentic, characterful wines from Burgenland.
