Description
Haut Brion 2018 in magnum format is a monumental red Bordeaux from one of the most historic estates in the world. A deeply layered, intellectually engaging wine, it marries power, finesse, and astonishing purity in a vintage that will reward serious cellaring. Bottled in 1.5L, this format amplifies its aging potential and makes it an exceptional choice for collectors and special occasions. Its unique selling proposition lies in the legendary pedigree of Château Haut-Brion, the only estate outside the Médoc to be classified as a First Growth in 1855, and in the extraordinary precision of the 2018 blend: 49.4% Merlot, 38.7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11.9% Cabernet Franc. The 2018 vintage is already being compared to icons like the 1989, but with even greater purity and refinement, cementing its place as a future classic of the estate.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, 2018 Haut Brion shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple color, almost black at the core, hinting at its density and youth. With air, it gradually unfurls an intricate aromatic tapestry: at first, freshly turned earth and warm gravel, then a pronounced thread of licorice and crushed stones, followed by layers of plum compote. As it opens, notes of crème de cassis, wild blueberries, kirsch, rose oil, cinnamon stick, truffle and redcurrant jelly emerge in a slow, captivating crescendo.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied yet utterly seamless, delivering tightly coiled black fruits and vivid red berries wrapped in a wonderfully velvety, fine-grained tannic frame. Exotic spice, graphite, earthy minerality and subtle savory truffle notes add complexity as the wine moves across the palate. The freshness is pitch-perfect, lifting the rich fruit and driving an exceptionally long, resonant finish laced with earth, mineral sparks and a lingering echo of dark berries and spice. Still very much in its infancy, this is a profound, multi-layered wine that will need around 7–8 years to begin to fully express itself and is capable of graceful evolution for at least 40 years or more, especially in magnum.
Production
Château Haut-Brion is located in Pessac-Léognan in the Graves, just south of the city of Bordeaux, where deep gravel beds mixed with clay and sand rest over a complex subsoil. This gravel-rich terroir, warmed by the sun and perfectly drained, is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and is central to the estate’s signature combination of power and smoky, mineral elegance. Grapes are harvested by hand in small parcels at optimal ripeness, with meticulous sorting to ensure only the finest berries make it into the grand vin. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to preserve finesse and detail, followed by maturation in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, where the wine develops its hallmark harmony, structure and aromatic complexity over many months before bottling.
Food & Serving
This 2018 Haut Brion is a natural partner to refined, flavorful cuisine: think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, venison or other game birds, dry-aged ribeye, braised beef cheeks, or classic French dishes like pigeon en croûte or truffled roast chicken. It also pairs beautifully with earthy accompaniments such as mushrooms, black truffle, root vegetables and celeriac purée, as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté or Ossau-Iraty. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. In its youth, especially in magnum, decant generously for 2–3 hours to help the wine unfurl; as it matures, a shorter, careful decant to remove sediment and 30–60 minutes of air will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Haut-Brion is one of the most storied names in fine wine, with a documented history stretching back to the early 16th century. Situated in what is now Pessac-Léognan, it became renowned in the 17th century as one of the very first Bordeaux wines to be recognized by name in the courts of England and France. In 1855 it was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé—uniquely, the only First Growth outside the Médoc—underlining its singular status in the region. Under the stewardship of the Dillon family since the 1930s, Haut-Brion has consistently produced some of the greatest and most ageworthy red wines in Bordeaux, widely celebrated for their complex aromatics, distinctive gravelly minerality, and remarkable ability to evolve for decades in the cellar.
