Description

Haut-Brion 2018 in the rare 6L Imperial format is a monumental expression of one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious First Growths. This vintage combines intensity, finesse, and precision in a way that will reward serious collectors and patient cellaring. Bottled in large format, it offers an extended evolution in the cellar and an even more majestic presence at the table.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, 2018 Haut-Brion shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple color that hints at its concentration and youth. The nose unfolds slowly with air, revealing a complex sequence of aromas: freshly turned earth and warm gravel give way to pronounced licorice and crushed stone, followed by layers of spiced plum compote. With further swirling, the bouquet builds into a crescendo of intense crème de cassis, rose oil, wild blueberries and kirsch, with subtler, persistent undertones of cinnamon stick, truffle and redcurrant jelly. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied yet remarkably poised, with densely knit black fruits and vivid red berries wrapped in an exquisitely fine, velvety tannin structure. Exotic spice, mineral sparks and earthy nuances weave through the core of fruit, carried by seamless, integrated freshness. The finish is epic in length, echoing with dark fruit, earth, and graphite notes long after each sip. This is a profoundly layered, cerebral wine that will require 7–8 years to begin showing its full song, and in this Imperial format has the structure to age gracefully for at least 40 years or more.

Production
The 2018 Haut-Brion is a blend of 49.4% Merlot, 38.7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11.9% Cabernet Franc, sourced from the estate’s historic gravel and sand over clay soils in Pessac-Léognan—terroir renowned for yielding both power and aromatic refinement. The vineyards are meticulously managed, with careful plot-by-plot selection and hand harvesting at optimal ripeness to preserve balance and purity. After rigorous sorting, the grapes are vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with each parcel treated individually to express its character. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels, a high proportion new, where it gains texture, complexity and harmony before bottling, with the Imperial format offering a slower, more nuanced evolution over time.

Food & Serving
This grand vin is best matched with refined, richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, game birds, or veal with truffle jus. It also pairs beautifully with earthy, mushroom-based dishes and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its youth and density, decanting for 3–4 hours is recommended in the near term, especially from this powerful 2018 vintage, to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its intricate layers.

Producer
Château Haut-Brion, located in Pessac-Léognan just outside Bordeaux, is one of the world’s most storied estates and the only property from outside the Médoc included in the original 1855 First Growth classification. With a documented history of producing great wines since the 16th century, Haut-Brion has long been celebrated for its distinctive gravel terroir and its uniquely smoky, mineral-inflected style. Under the stewardship of the Dillon family, the château has continued to refine its viticulture and winemaking, consistently crafting wines that rank among the most coveted and age-worthy in Bordeaux, with vintages like 1989 and now 2018 standing as benchmarks for depth, elegance, and longevity.
