Description
Bottled in an impressive 3L double magnum, Haut-Brion 2018 is a monumental expression of one of Bordeaux’s most storied First Growths. A blend of 49.4% Merlot, 38.7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11.9% Cabernet Franc, it marries power and refinement with almost orchestral complexity. Often compared to the legendary 1989, yet with even greater purity and restraint, this is a collector’s vintage built for the long haul.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Haut-Brion shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple hue that clings to the sides with slow, stained tears. The nose unfolds gradually with air, beginning with tilled earth and graphite-laced crushed stones, before moving into pronounced licorice, spiced plum compote and crème de cassis. With time, layers of rose oil, wild blueberry, kirsch, cinnamon stick, truffle and redcurrant jelly emerge in a captivating, ever‑shifting aromatic profile.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, dense and tightly wound, delivering compact black fruits and vibrant red berries wrapped in exotic spice and subtle floral notes. The tannins are abundant yet wonderfully fine-grained and velvety, giving a seamless, almost weightless structure supported by fresh, precise acidity. Mineral and earthy nuances sparkle through the finish, which is remarkably long and persistent. Still very much an infant, this 2018 will need around 7–8 years in bottle to begin showing its full personality and has the structure to evolve gracefully for at least four decades in this large-format bottle.
Production
Château Haut-Brion sits in the gravelly heart of Pessac-Léognan, just south of Bordeaux, on deep beds of Günzian gravel mixed with clay and sand that provide superb drainage and help concentrate flavor and tannin in the grapes. The 2018 harvest was carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, with rigorous sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe berries made it into the grand vin. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled vats, with each plot vinified separately to preserve its character, before blending. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques, a high proportion of them new, allowing oxygen to gently soften the tannins and integrate the complex fruit, mineral and spice components into a harmonious whole.
Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Bordeaux is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, game birds with truffle jus or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, refined poultry in demi-glace sauces and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmesan. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given the youth and structure of the 2018 vintage, decant for at least 2–3 hours if opening in the next decade; for peak enjoyment, extended cellaring followed by generous aeration will allow it to fully unfurl.
Producer
Château Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux’s most historic and revered estates, recognized as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification and the only wine from outside the Médoc to receive that honor. Wine has been produced on this gravel knoll in Pessac since at least the 16th century, and Haut-Brion is often credited as a pioneer of the modern concept of fine, estate-bottled wine. Today, under the stewardship of Domaine Clarence Dillon, the château remains a benchmark for Graves and for Bordeaux as a whole, renowned for its signature combination of depth, complexity, smoky minerality and extraordinary longevity. The 2018 continues this legacy, standing alongside the estate’s greatest vintages.
