Description
Château Haut-Brion 2020 is one of Bordeaux’s most revered red wines, offering the finesse, depth, and unmistakable individuality that have made this First Growth a benchmark for centuries. From its historic terroir in Pessac-Léognan, it combines ripe Cabernet Sauvignon, plush Merlot, and aromatic Cabernet Franc in a wine of remarkable elegance and authority.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Haut-Brion shows a deep, concentrated ruby hue with a polished, almost satin-like sheen. The nose is layered and precise, unfolding with blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf, and a subtle smoky earthiness that is so characteristic of the estate.
On the palate, it is rich yet beautifully composed, with fine-grained tannins, vivid freshness, and impressive concentration. Dark fruit, savory spice, and mineral undertones build in long waves, leading to a persistent, refined finish. While already deeply impressive, this is a wine built for the long haul and should develop beautifully over several decades.
Production
Haut-Brion comes from one of Bordeaux’s most distinctive terroirs, with gravelly soils over clay and sand in the commune of Pessac-Léognan, just outside the city of Bordeaux. The estate’s vineyards benefit from excellent drainage and a warm microclimate that helps the grapes ripen evenly, while harvest is typically carried out parcel by parcel to capture each plot at optimal maturity. Vinification is carefully managed to preserve purity and structure, with meticulous selection and aging in French oak to enhance complexity without overwhelming the wine’s natural balance.
Food & Serving
This is a classic match for roasted lamb, beef fillet, duck breast, game birds, and richly flavored dishes with truffle or mushroom accents. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open fully; older bottles may require only a gentle decant.
Producer
Château Haut-Brion is one of the most historic names in Bordeaux and the only First Growth located outside the Médoc in the 1855 classification. Its reputation was established centuries ago, admired early on for the exceptional quality and distinctive style of its wines. Today, Haut-Brion remains a reference point for Pessac-Léognan and one of the world’s most celebrated wine estates, known for consistency, refinement, and longevity.
