Château Haut-Brion 2014 is one of Bordeaux’s most distinguished red wines, produced at the historic Premier Grand Cru Classé estate in Pessac-Léognan. Renowned for its depth, finesse and distinctive smoky character, it combines the gravitas of a great Left Bank wine with remarkable elegance and detail. The château was the only Pessac-Léognan estate included among Bordeaux’s original five First Growths in the 1855 classification.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in colour, the 2014 Haut-Brion opens with an expressive bouquet of blackcurrant, plum and dark cherry, followed by subtle notes of tobacco, cedar, graphite and the estate’s characteristic earthy smokiness. With time in the glass, more refined nuances of spice, violet and leather emerge.
On the palate, it is structured yet polished, offering concentrated dark fruit, fresh acidity and finely grained tannins. The finish is long, savoury and mineral, with an impressive balance between power and precision. This is a wine with considerable ageing potential and should continue to develop beautifully over the next two decades or more when well stored.
Production
The vineyards of Haut-Brion are planted on the gravelly soils characteristic of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, with underlying clay and sand contributing both drainage and depth. The estate’s red wines are made from a traditional Bordeaux blend, led by Cabernet Sauvignon and supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Grapes are carefully selected and vinified parcel by parcel, followed by maturation in oak to integrate the wine’s structure and amplify its complexity while preserving the estate’s signature balance.
Food & Serving
A classic partner for roast beef, rack of lamb, venison and other richly flavoured red meats, Haut-Brion also pairs well with truffle dishes, wild mushrooms and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Given its youth and structure, decant for around two hours before serving, while older bottles should be handled carefully and decanted primarily to remove any sediment.
Producer
Château Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux’s oldest and most celebrated wine estates, with a recorded history dating back to the 16th century. Situated in what is now Pessac-Léognan, it has long been recognised for producing wines of exceptional individuality, and its inclusion as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855 confirmed its place among Bordeaux’s elite. The château remains particularly noted for the distinctive perfume, smoky complexity and graceful longevity of its red wines.
