Château Haut-Brion 2006 is a distinguished First Growth from Pessac-Léognan and one of Bordeaux’s most historic wines. Combining Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, it is celebrated for its remarkable depth, refined structure and distinctive gravelly character, with the 2006 vintage offering both power and elegance.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby with garnet reflections, the wine shows impressive concentration in the glass. Its bouquet reveals ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and plum alongside cigar box, graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf and subtle earthy, smoky nuances. With time, Haut-Brion’s characteristic aromatic complexity continues to unfold.
The palate is full-bodied and finely structured, balancing generous dark fruit with polished tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish. Notes of cassis, dark cherry, spice, pencil lead and mature oak develop as the wine opens. Now entering a rewarding stage of maturity, it can be enjoyed today with decanting and should continue to evolve gracefully in a well-maintained cellar.
Production
Haut-Brion’s vineyards lie on the distinctive gravelly soils of Pessac-Léognan, where free-draining gravel over clay and sand encourages deep-rooted vines and naturally concentrated fruit. The wine is produced from carefully selected Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with harvesting carried out parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. Traditional Bordeaux vinification is followed by maturation in oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop its texture, aromatic depth and seamless integration over time.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gradually to cellar temperature. Decant for around one to two hours, taking care with any mature sediment. Its depth and savoury complexity make it an excellent match for roast beef, rack of lamb, venison, beef Wellington and richly flavoured mushroom dishes. Mature hard cheeses, such as Comté or aged cheddar, are also well suited.
Producer
Château Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious estates and the oldest of the five First Growths classified in 1855. Located in what is now Pessac-Léognan, just south of Bordeaux, the estate has been producing celebrated wines for centuries and is renowned for its unique gravel soils, exceptional longevity and distinctive smoky, earthy style. Haut-Brion remains a benchmark for the region and one of the most sought-after names in fine wine.
