Description
Haut Batailley 2017 is a classic Pauillac from one of the Left Bank’s most respected Fifth Growth estates. Built around Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot adding softness and balance, it offers the structure, precision, and Cabernet-driven character that make Pauillac so sought after.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby color with youthful purple reflections. The nose leans toward blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, and subtle tobacco, with a refined floral and earthy edge that becomes more expressive with air.
On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, with firm but polished tannins, bright acidity, and a core of dark berry fruit layered with savory oak, spice, and mineral notes. The 2017 vintage is generally approachable earlier than more powerful years, yet it still has the backbone to age gracefully for many years, developing more complexity over the next decade or longer.
Production
Haut Batailley is based in Pauillac, where gravelly soils and excellent drainage help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve classic Left Bank structure and aromatic purity. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot reflects the estate’s aim of combining power, freshness, and finesse, with vinification designed to preserve fruit definition and the signature balance of the terroir.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or game dishes, as well as hard cheeses and mushroom-based recipes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening young, to allow the wine’s aromas and tannins to open fully.
Producer
Haut Batailley is a historic Fifth Growth estate in Pauillac, part of the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Long admired for its reliable classicism and strong sense of place, the château has built a reputation for producing elegant, ageworthy wines that reflect the refinement of one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious communes.
