Hartford Russian River Zinfandel 2019

Hartford Russian River Zinfandel 2019 is a richly styled, old-vine Zinfandel from one of California’s most respected cool-climate pockets. Sourced from five vineyard sites averaging more than 100 years of age, it delivers striking concentration and depth while keeping the fruit pure and balanced. It’s a classic example of Russian River Valley Zinfandel at a very high level: expressive, powerful, and polished.

Tasting Notes
The wine pours a deep, dark ruby color with impressive intensity. Aromas open with fresh blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, and boysenberry, layered with spice, leather, and a subtle savory edge. On the palate, it is plush and generous, with blackberry, mocha, nutmeg, and cinnamon at the core, followed by finishing notes of licorice and freshly ground pepper. Despite its 16% alcohol, the wine remains remarkably well integrated and never feels heavy. It is excellent now and should continue to drink beautifully over the next 5 years.

Production
This Zinfandel comes from five different vineyards in the Russian River Valley, where the old vines—averaging over a century in age—naturally produce very low yields and highly concentrated fruit. The cooler climate of the region helps preserve freshness and aromatic detail, even in a powerful vintage. Winemaker Jeff Stewart aged the wine for 16 months in French oak barrels, with just under half being new, and bottled it without fining or filtration to preserve its full character and texture.

Food & Serving
This is an ideal partner for grilled and roasted meats, barbecue, spiced pork, beef short ribs, and rich dishes with a smoky or peppery edge. It also works well with mature hard cheeses and dishes featuring blackberry, plum, or Mediterranean herbs. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes to let the aromatics fully open.
