Description
Gutzler Schwarzblauer Riesling trocken from the “Historische Rebsorten” series is a fascinating take on one of Rheinhessen’s rare and nearly forgotten grape varieties. Produced in a dry style, it highlights the grape’s original character while reflecting Gutzler’s respect for local tradition and the region’s winemaking heritage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby-red color, which immediately sets it apart from more familiar Riesling expressions. The nose opens with aromas of red cherry, wild berries, and a subtle herbal note, giving the wine a fresh yet slightly untamed profile.
On the palate, it is linear and dry with firm tannins, lively acidity, and a spicy, almost wild personality. The finish is juicy, persistent, and marked by a refined bitter edge, making it both refreshing and memorable. With its structure and balance, it should age well over the medium term, developing added complexity over time.
Production
The grapes come from limestone-rich vineyards in Rheinhessen, where the soils help give the wine its firm structure and clear sense of place. Farming follows sustainable principles, and the fruit is harvested by hand to ensure careful selection. Vinification is gentle, with a 10-day fermentation followed by 16 months of aging in used wooden barrels.
Food & Serving
This wine is a natural match for roasted poultry, game birds, pork with herbs, mushroom dishes, and aged cheeses. Serve it slightly chilled at around 14-16°C to preserve its freshness and structure. Decanting is recommended if you want to soften the tannins and let the wine’s aromatic layers open up fully.
Producer
Gutzler is a respected family producer in Rheinhessen, known for combining modern precision with a deep appreciation for regional tradition. Their “Historische Rebsorten” series reflects a commitment to preserving old and rare grape varieties, bringing them back into the spotlight with careful, character-driven winemaking. The winery has earned recognition for its thoughtful approach and its ability to create distinctive wines with strong local identity.
