Description

Gutzler Kleiner Fränkischer Burgunder trocken is a compelling expression of one of Germany’s most historically intriguing Pinot Noir relatives, once prized as far back as Charlemagne’s era and later nearly lost to time. Gutzler’s modern interpretation brings this rediscovered grape back into focus with purity, finesse, and a distinctly German voice.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a refined, dark-fruited profile with aromas of blackberry, wild forest berries, and gentle spice. The palate is deep and concentrated, with dark berries at the core, a peppery edge, and a firm tannic structure that gives the wine shape and length. Despite its intensity, the wine remains elegant and layered, with a style that should reward a few years of cellaring as the textures soften and the complexity unfolds.

Production
The grapes are hand-harvested with careful selection, then fully destemmed before undergoing a classic 12-day maceration on the skins. After pressing at very low pressure, the wine matures for 16 months in second-use barriques, where it rests on the lees to build depth and complexity. Minimal sulfur is added at bottling to preserve the wine’s authentic character and the pure expression of this historic variety.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine that pairs well with roast duck, venison, mushroom dishes, braised beef, and richly flavored poultry. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider a short decant if drinking young to help open up the wine’s aromatic detail and soften the tannins.

Producer
Gutzler is a respected family producer in Rheinhessen, known for combining careful vineyard work with a thoughtful, terroir-driven approach in the cellar. The estate has earned a strong reputation for precise, characterful wines, and its work with historical grape varieties highlights both regional heritage and innovation in German red wine.
