Description

Guigal La Landonne 2016 is one of the great benchmark wines of Côte-Rôtie, a commanding and deeply structured expression of 100% Syrah from one of the appellation’s most revered single vineyards. Among Guigal’s legendary “La La” trio, La Landonne is known as the darkest, most powerful, and most tannic – a wine built for the long haul. The 2016 vintage continues this legacy, marrying intense concentration and structure with remarkable finesse, ensuring decades of graceful evolution in bottle.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Landonne 2016 is opaque, inky purple with a near-black core and a narrow violet rim, signaling its youth and power. The nose opens with smoky, savory complexity: hints of grilled and cured meat, roasted coffee bean, and a touch of scorched earth, layered over deep blackcurrant, blackberry compote, black olive, and dried herbs. Subtle notes of cocoa, licorice, and cracked pepper emerge with air, adding still more dimension. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied but immensely concentrated, with tightly knit tannins that wrap around a core of ripe black fruit. Waves of cassis, black plum, and dark cherry are interlaced with tapenade, garrigue herbs, espresso, and a faint gamey nuance. The texture is rich yet velvety, with a precise line of acidity keeping everything fresh and lifted. The finish is impressively long, echoing with smoked meat, spice, and mineral notes. While already showing its pedigree, the wine is clearly structured for the cellar, with the potential to age and develop more complexity over 20–25 years or longer in ideal conditions.

Production
La Landonne is a steep, terraced hillside vineyard in the northern Rhône, planted on poor, heat-retaining schist and mica-schist soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate the Syrah’s character. Old vines and a south/southeast exposure ensure optimal ripening, while the cooling influence of the Rhône valley’s winds preserves acidity and aromatic complexity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, given the extreme slope and the need for careful selection. In the cellar, La Landonne is vinified as a single-vineyard cuvée, with long, traditional macerations to extract color, tannin, and flavor, followed by extended maturation in oak (a high proportion of new barrels), where the wine slowly integrates its structure and develops its signature smoky, savory depth before bottling.

Food & Serving
This is a serious, structured Côte-Rôtie that shines alongside rich, savory dishes. Think dry-aged ribeye, slow-braised beef short ribs, venison or other game, lamb shank, or dishes featuring mushrooms, truffle, or smoked elements. It also pairs beautifully with robust, earthy cheeses such as aged Comté or mature hard sheep’s cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to show both its aromatic complexity and textural finesse. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended to soften the tannins and allow the wine to unfurl; older bottles (15+ years) can be decanted gently 30–60 minutes before serving to separate any sediment and awaken mature aromas.

Producer
Founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis, Maison Guigal has become the reference point for Côte-Rôtie and one of the most respected names in the Rhône Valley. Under the stewardship of Marcel and now Philippe Guigal, the estate has played a pivotal role in elevating the reputation of northern Rhône Syrah worldwide. The trio of single-vineyard Côte-Rôties—La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne—are among the most sought-after wines in the world, frequently receiving top scores and critical acclaim for their precision, depth, and aging potential. Guigal’s meticulous work in the vineyards and cellar, combined with an unwavering commitment to quality at every level, has made the estate a benchmark producer, shaping the modern image of Côte-Rôtie and the Rhône on the global fine wine stage.
