Description

Guigal La Landonne 2013 is one of the legendary single-vineyard Côte-Rôties, a wine that has become a benchmark for serious Syrah from the Northern Rhône. Sourced from the steep, terraced slopes of the famed La Landonne lieu-dit, this cuvée is known for its power, structure and extraordinary longevity. The 2013 vintage captures that signature depth with an elegant cool-vintage freshness, promising decades of graceful evolution in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Landonne 2013 is deeply colored, almost opaque, with a dense garnet core and a narrow, youthful rim. The nose opens slowly but intensely, revealing layers of black fruit—plum, blackberry and blackcurrant—woven with notes of graphite, pencil shavings, espresso, roasted meat, cracked pepper and a subtle smoked bacon character typical of great Côte-Rôtie. With air, hints of violet, licorice and dark cocoa emerge, adding even more complexity. On the palate, this is full-bodied, concentrated and firmly structured, with abundant but refined tannins that feel powerful yet polished rather than dry or aggressive. The black fruit is pure and vibrant, framed by savory notes of grilled meat, roasted coffee beans, olive tapenade and a touch of spice. The acidity is fresh and well-integrated, giving lift to the richness and driving a very long, persistent finish. This 2013 is still on the youthful side and will reward patience: it can be enjoyed now with a long decant, but has the structure to age gracefully for two to three decades from the vintage in a good cellar.

Production
La Landonne comes from the Côte Brune sector of Côte-Rôtie, where darker, iron-rich schist and steep, south/south-east facing slopes produce some of the appellation’s most intense and long-lived wines. Vines are predominantly old, low-yielding Syrah planted on narrow terraces that must be worked almost entirely by hand due to the extreme gradient. Harvesting is done manually, with strict selection of perfectly ripe grapes. In the cellar, La Landonne is vinified as 100% Syrah, typically with a long maceration to extract color, tannin and flavor, followed by extended aging—often around 40+ months—in predominantly new French oak barrels. The result is a wine that marries the wild, savory character of the Northern Rhône with the polish and depth expected from one of Guigal’s flagship cuvées.

Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic wine best matched with richly flavored dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank, beef cheeks, venison, roast ribeye, duck breast with a dark reduction, or game birds with wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with hearty stews, truffled dishes and mature hard cheeses like aged Comté or a well-aged cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. If drinking in its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the bouquet and structure to soften and unfold; mature bottles will benefit from a gentler, shorter decant mainly to remove sediment.

Producer
Founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal in Ampuis, Maison Guigal has become one of the most influential estates in the Rhône Valley and a global reference for Syrah. Under the guidance of the Guigal family, the domaine pioneered the concept of single-vineyard “La-La” Côte-Rôties—La Mouline, La Turque and La Landonne—which helped cement Côte-Rôtie’s reputation as one of the world’s great wine regions. Today, Guigal is renowned for meticulous vineyard work, rigorous selection and exceptionally long élevage, producing wines that are both expressive of their terroir and capable of long-term aging. La Landonne, in particular, is celebrated as one of the most powerful and ageworthy expressions of Côte-Rôtie, consistently earning top acclaim from critics and collectors alike.
