Description

E. Guigal’s Château d’Ampuis is the estate’s prestige Côte-Rôtie, crafted as the bridge between the classic village wine and the famed single-vineyard icons La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque. Drawn from top parcels on both Côte Blonde and Côte Brune, it captures the depth, power, and finesse that have made Côte-Rôtie one of the Rhône’s most celebrated appellations.

Tasting Notes
Deep and inviting in the glass, this 2003 shows aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, violet, black pepper, and smoked bacon, layered with licorice, olive, and subtle oriental spice. Extended oak aging adds hints of cedar, vanilla, and toast, while keeping the wine’s terroir-driven character very much intact. On the palate, it brings together the structure and muscularity of Côte Brune with the elegance and lift of Côte Blonde. Concentrated yet silky, it offers refined tannins, a firm mineral spine, and a long, evolving finish of dark fruit, spice, and crushed slate. This is a wine with excellent aging potential and the depth to continue developing beautifully in bottle.

Production
Château d’Ampuis is assembled from some of the appellation’s best vineyard parcels, split between the contrasting soils and exposures of Côte Blonde and Côte Brune. This blending of terroirs is central to the wine’s identity, combining freshness and perfume with power and structure. The grapes are carefully harvested and vinified with a focus on preserving site expression, followed by long barrel aging that adds complexity without overwhelming the fruit and mineral core.

Food & Serving
This is an ideal match for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb, venison, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or game with herb and pepper accents. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses and slow-cooked Mediterranean dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if enjoyed young, or longer if the bottle has seen extended cellar time.

Producer
E. Guigal, founded in 1946 in Ampuis, is one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected producers and a benchmark name in Côte-Rôtie. The house is renowned for its meticulous vineyard work, age-worthy wines, and iconic cuvées from top sites across the northern Rhône. Château d’Ampuis stands as one of its most prestigious wines and a clear expression of the estate’s mastery of the region.
