Description

Guastaferro Raffaele Aglianico Memini Irpinia 2017 is a characterful red from the hills of Campania, crafted from one of Italy’s most noble yet still-underrated grapes. This wine captures the dark-fruited intensity and volcanic tension that have made Irpinia a quiet favorite among serious Aglianico lovers. Memini is designed as a more approachable, earlier-drinking expression than classic Taurasi, while still offering depth, structure and a strong sense of place. Its unique appeal lies in the combination of old-vine fruit, high-altitude vineyards and meticulous, small-scale craftsmanship. The 2017 vintage in Irpinia delivered ripe, concentrated grapes with excellent phenolic maturity, resulting in a wine that balances power with vibrancy. While Aglianico has been cultivated in Campania since ancient times, Guastaferro’s work has helped reassert the region’s historical reputation for ageworthy, terroir-driven reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Memini Irpinia Aglianico 2017 shows a deep ruby core with garnet highlights developing toward the rim, a sign of its evolution while still retaining freshness. The nose is expressive and layered, offering aromas of black cherry, macerated plum and blackberry, intertwined with notes of dried rose, sweet herbs, licorice and a hint of earthy spice. Subtle suggestions of cocoa, tobacco leaf and a touch of smoky, volcanic minerality add complexity as it opens. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a firm, finely etched tannic backbone that is typical of Aglianico, yet more polished and accessible than many Taurasi bottlings. Flavors of dark cherry, blackcurrant and blood orange are supported by savory undertones of leather, black tea and graphite. The acidity is vibrant and well-integrated, giving the wine lift and precision, while the finish is long, dry and pleasantly bittersweet with lingering notes of spice and mineral. The 2017 Memini is drinking very well now, with its structure softening nicely, but it still has the capacity to evolve over the next 5–8 years under good cellaring conditions.

Production
Memini is sourced from selected Aglianico parcels in Irpinia, a cool, elevated subregion of Campania characterized by volcanic and calcareous-clay soils. These soils, combined with significant diurnal temperature swings, allow for slow, even ripening and excellent retention of acidity, giving the wines both power and freshness. Guastaferro typically works with low-yielding, older vines that naturally concentrate flavor and tannin. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal phenolic ripeness, with careful selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation usually takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel or traditional tanks, with extended maceration on the skins to extract color, aroma and structure. The wine is then aged in a mix of neutral oak and/or large casks, allowing tannins to integrate and aromas to develop without overwhelming the varietal character, before being bottled with minimal intervention to preserve the authenticity of the Irpinia terroir.

Food & Serving
This Aglianico is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes that can match its structure and intensity. It pairs beautifully with braised lamb shank, slow-cooked beef ragù, ossobuco, grilled sausages, and game meats such as venison or wild boar. Classic southern Italian fare like eggplant parmigiana, lasagna al forno, or aged caciocavallo and pecorino cheeses also work exceptionally well. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. A brief decant of 45–60 minutes is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the more complex floral and earthy notes to emerge, especially if opened in the next few years.

Producer
Azienda Agricola Guastaferro Raffaele is a small, quality-driven estate based in the heart of Irpinia, within Campania’s historic Taurasi zone. The family is known for working with old, often ungrafted Aglianico vines planted on volcanic slopes, many at higher altitudes where cooler temperatures preserve acidity and aromatic finesse. Over the years, Guastaferro has earned a reputation among enthusiasts and critics as a boutique producer crafting intensely characterful, terroir-expressive reds that stand alongside some of the region’s best. Their commitment to low yields, manual vineyard work and thoughtful, minimally invasive cellar practices has helped shine a modern light on the long winemaking heritage of Irpinia and reinforced Campania’s status as one of Italy’s great but still relatively undiscovered fine wine regions.
