Description
Château Gruaud Larose is one of Saint-Julien’s most respected names, offering a classic Left Bank blend with the depth and structure collectors look for. Ranked as a 2ème Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Classification, the 2021 vintage reflects the estate’s hallmark precision, elegance, and long-lived style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is typically a deep ruby-purple, showing the concentration expected from a classified Bordeaux. The nose leans toward blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, and subtle floral and spice notes, with the vintage’s freshness giving the aromas lift and definition.
On the palate, expect a firm yet polished frame of Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot’s roundness and the aromatic complexity of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is structured, savory, and balanced, with fine-grained tannins and a long finish. While approachable with patience, it has the backbone to age gracefully for many years, developing greater complexity over time.
Production
Gruaud Larose comes from the Saint-Julien appellation on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravel-rich soils provide excellent drainage and help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve ripeness and structure. The estate typically relies on careful vineyard management and selective harvesting to preserve fruit quality, followed by traditional vinification aimed at extracting color, aromatic intensity, and tannin detail while maintaining balance and freshness.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, grilled ribeye, game birds, and dishes with mushrooms or truffle. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromas and tannins to open fully.
Producer
Gruaud Larose is a historic Saint-Julien estate with roots dating back to the 18th century and a strong reputation for producing classically styled Bordeaux of depth and longevity. As a 2ème Grand Cru Classé, it holds an important place in the region’s hierarchy and has earned admiration for consistency, ageing potential, and a distinctive house style that combines power with refinement.
