Description
Gruaud Larose 2021 is a poised and classical Saint-Julien that shows how beautifully this vintage can perform in skilled hands. Unfolding slowly in the glass, it combines ripe, sweet wild berries and floral elegance with a refined, velvety structure. This is a textbook Left Bank claret from a historic Second Growth estate, offering both immediate charm and the promise of graceful evolution in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Gruaud Larose presents a deep ruby color with a vibrant, youthful rim, hinting at its freshness and energy. The nose opens with sweet wild berries and ripe plums, followed by delicate violets, cigar wrapper, subtle cedar, and a touch of graphite typical of fine Saint-Julien.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and remarkably silky, with a polished, seamless texture. The core shows good depth of fruit—red and black berries layered with gentle spice and tobacco nuances—supported by supple, finely knit tannins and lively, refreshing acidity. The finish is pure and persistent, more about elegance and length than sheer power, suggesting a wine that will drink well in its youth yet has the structure to develop further complexity over the next 10–15 years, and potentially longer in ideal cellaring conditions.
Production
Sourced from the renowned gravelly terraces of Saint-Julien in Bordeaux, Gruaud Larose’s vineyards sit on deep layers of Garonne gravel over clay and sand, a terroir that naturally favors Cabernet Sauvignon and produces wines of finesse and structure. The 2021 vintage was managed with meticulous vineyard work, including careful canopy management and strict selection at harvest to ensure only optimally ripe and healthy grapes made it into the final blend. Hand-harvested fruit was sorted multiple times before undergoing a gentle vinification in temperature-controlled vats, with maceration tailored to preserve freshness, fine tannins, and aromatic purity. Aging traditionally takes place in French oak barriques, a proportion of which are new, to integrate texture and complexity without overwhelming the wine’s elegant, classic profile.
Food & Serving
Gruaud Larose 2021 is a natural companion to refined, savory dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or veal with morel sauce. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. For younger bottles, decanting for about 1–2 hours will help open the bouquet and soften the structure, while more mature bottles may need only a gentle splash-decant to remove any sediment.
