Description
Griesel & Compagnie Pinot Blanc Brut Nature Prestige Late Release 2020 is a finely crafted German sparkling wine that puts Pinot Blanc center stage with precision and finesse. Produced as a Brut Nature, it is completely dry, allowing the grape and terroir of the Hessische Bergstraße to shine without the influence of dosage. This Late Release cuvée spends extended time on the lees, resulting in extra depth, complexity, and a refined, gastronomic style that rivals many classic sparkling regions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pinot Blanc Brut Nature shows a pale straw to light gold color, animated by a fine, persistent mousse and delicate streams of tiny bubbles. The nose is precise and mineral-driven, with aromas of green apple, conference pear, white peach, lemon zest, and subtle notes of brioche, toasted hazelnut, and chalk. Hints of white flowers and fresh herbs add lift and complexity.
On the palate, it is bone-dry, taut, and impressively structured, with a pure, linear acidity that gives great freshness and length. Crisp orchard fruits, citrus pith, and light stone-fruit tones are layered over a salty, stony backbone, with autolytic notes of pastry, almond and fresh bread crust from extended lees aging. The finish is long, clean and mouthwatering, leaving a lingering impression of citrus, wet stone, and gentle nuttiness. Enjoyable now for its energy and precision, it also has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 3–6 years, gaining more creaminess and complexity with time in bottle.
Production
Sourced from carefully selected Pinot Blanc (Weißburgunder) parcels along the Hessische Bergstraße, this wine reflects a cool-climate, hilly landscape characterized by mixed soils of loess, clay, and limestone that favor vibrant acidity and minerality. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness for sparkling wine, with an emphasis on healthy, aromatic fruit and balanced natural acidity. After a gentle pressing, the base wine is fermented—often in a mix of stainless steel and, in part, neutral barrels—at controlled temperatures to preserve purity. The traditional method (méthode traditionnelle) second fermentation in bottle follows, after which the wine spends an extended period on the lees as part of the Prestige Late Release approach, building texture, fine mousse, and autolytic complexity. It is disgorged without dosage (Brut Nature), highlighting the precision of the fruit and terroir.
Food & Serving
This Brut Nature Pinot Blanc is a versatile food partner, especially suited to refined, lighter dishes. It pairs beautifully with oysters, scallop ceviche, sushi and sashimi, as well as delicate fish dishes such as poached trout, grilled sea bass, or sole in beurre blanc. Its saline, mineral edge also flatters fresh goat cheese, soft cheeses with bloomy rinds, seasonal vegetable tarts, asparagus dishes, and lightly spiced poultry or veal. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C to emphasize its freshness and tension. A brief decant in a carafe or simply giving it a few minutes in the glass after opening can help the wine unfold its more complex, autolytic and nutty nuances.
Producer
Griesel & Compagnie is one of the dynamic names in Germany’s modern sparkling wine scene, based in the Hessische Bergstraße—a small but historic region just south of the Rheingau. With a strong focus on traditional-method sparkling wines, the estate has built a reputation for precise, terroir-driven bottlings that showcase the potential of cool-climate German vineyards for high-quality bubbles. By concentrating on varieties such as Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir, meticulous hand-harvesting, and extended lees aging, Griesel & Compagnie has helped shine a spotlight on the Hessische Bergstraße as a serious source of premium German Sekt, earning attention from sommeliers and wine enthusiasts well beyond its home region.
