Description

Greenock Creek’s Cornerstone Grenache 2005 is a powerful, old-vine Barossa red that showcases the depth and intensity this region is famous for. Sourced from 62-year-old Grenache vines and matured in a mix of new and seasoned French oak, it combines richness, spice, and purity in a concentrated yet seductive style. This is a benchmark example of traditional Barossa Grenache from one of the valley’s most respected small producers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2005 Cornerstone Grenache shows a deep, dark ruby hue, still vibrant with just a hint of development at the rim. The nose is almost exotic: layers of smouldering smoke, Asian spices, rhubarb compote, and ripe black cherry unfold with air, accented by subtle oak tones and a touch of dried herbs. On the palate, it is full-bodied, intense, and richly textured, with a sweet-fruited core that feels seamless and unforced. Ripe black cherry, raspberry liqueur, and stewed plum flavours are supported by notes of cocoa, smoked spice, and a savoury, gamey edge that comes with age. The tannins are fine and integrated, giving the wine a smooth, gliding mouthfeel, while the finish is long, pure, and persistent. Originally recommended for drinking over roughly a 10-year window from release, well-cellared bottles can still offer pleasure today, showing a more evolved, complex profile; enjoy now to capture its remaining freshness and layered maturity.

Production
The fruit for Cornerstone Grenache 2005 comes from old, low-yielding bush vines in the Barossa Valley, rooted in classic warm-climate terroir of varied sandy loams, clay, and ironstone over ancient subsoils. This combination of old vines and poor, well-drained soils naturally limits yields, concentrating flavour and structure in the grapes. Harvest is typically carried out by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve fruit integrity and select only the best bunches. In the cellar, the must is traditionally fermented to extract colour, flavour, and tannin, followed by maturation in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels. This careful use of oak adds complexity and texture without overwhelming the Grenache’s character, allowing the wine’s purity and power to shine.

Food & Serving
This generous, richly flavoured Grenache pairs beautifully with robust, savoury dishes. Think slow-cooked lamb shoulder with rosemary, duck confit, grilled venison, or hearty casseroles and stews; it also works well with spice-inflected cuisine such as Moroccan tagines, chargrilled meats with Middle Eastern spices, and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to keep the fruit fresh and the alcohol in balance. For bottles at this age, a gentle decant of 30–60 minutes can help the wine open up aromatically and allow any sediment to settle, revealing its full, complex bouquet.

Producer
Greenock Creek Vineyard and Cellars, owned and run by Michael and Annabelle Waugh, is widely regarded as one of Barossa Valley’s leading small estates. From its beginnings as a tiny, quality-focused operation, Greenock Creek has built a reputation for intensely flavoured, old-vine wines that speak clearly of their sites. The winery has played an important role in championing traditional Barossa values—low yields, old vine material, and hands-on winemaking—at a time when many producers were modernising their styles. Over the years, Greenock Creek’s wines have drawn critical acclaim and a devoted following among collectors for their depth, authenticity, and remarkable aging ability, solidifying the estate’s status as a Barossa benchmark.
