Description
Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso Superiore 2022 is one of the standout reds from Bolgheri, blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese into a wine with both Tuscan character and international polish. Sourced from the renowned Grattamacco estate, it reflects the coastal elegance and depth that have made Bolgheri one of Italy’s most celebrated red wine regions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby colour with concentrated depth and bright youthful reflections. The bouquet is layered and expressive, combining ripe dark berries, plum, Mediterranean herbs, tobacco, cedar and a subtle mineral edge.
On the palate, it is structured yet refined, with ripe fruit, lively freshness and fine-grained tannins that give the wine length and definition. The Sangiovese brings lift and savoury nuance, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot add richness and breadth. It should age beautifully over the next 8–15 years, developing more earthy, balsamic and spice-driven complexity with time.
Production
Grattamacco is located in the Bolgheri area on Tuscany’s Tyrrhenian coast, where the vines benefit from maritime breezes, warm days and cooling nights that help preserve freshness in the grapes. The terroir is known for its mix of clay, limestone and sandy soils, which contributes to both concentration and finesse. The grapes are typically harvested by hand and vinified with careful parcel selection to preserve the individuality of each variety before ageing in oak to build structure and harmony.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, wild game, lamb, and Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina or pappardelle with rich meat ragù. It also works well with mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for about an hour when young to allow the aromas and tannins to open fully.
Producer
Grattamacco is one of the pioneering estates of Bolgheri and has played an important role in establishing the region’s reputation for world-class red wines. Now part of the Colle Massari group, the estate is known for its commitment to quality, sustainable farming and a distinctive style that combines power, elegance and a strong sense of place. Its wines are widely respected for their consistency and ageing potential.
