Description

Graci Quota 1000 Barbabecchi 2019 is one of the purest, highest‑altitude expressions of Nerello Mascalese on Mount Etna, crafted from old vines rooted in the dramatic volcanic slopes of Sicily. Drawn from the famed Barbabecchi cru at around 1,000 meters above sea level, this red marries intensity with finesse, capturing the stark beauty of its extreme terroir. Each vintage is deliberately allowed to speak for itself, making this wine a compelling snapshot of Etna’s most singular landscape in 2019.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Quota 1000 Barbabecchi 2019 shows a luminous, pale ruby to garnet hue, reminiscent of fine Nebbiolo or Pinot Noir, with a delicate translucence that hints at its elegance rather than sheer power. The nose is finely etched and highly expressive: wild red berries, sour cherry and pomegranate weave together with blood orange peel, dried rose petals, wild herbs, and a distinct mineral edge of ash, iron and crushed rock, framed by subtle spice and fine oak nuances. On the palate, the wine is taut, vertical and poised, with a refined, almost weightless texture that belies its depth. Precise red fruit, tangy citrus tones and a savory, saline core are carried by vibrant acidity and ultra‑fine, chalky tannins. There’s a long, resonant finish that lingers with notes of dried flowers, tea leaves and volcanic mineral tension. Still youthful and tightly coiled in 2019, it has significant aging potential; over 10–15+ years it should develop more forest floor, truffle, tobacco and balsamic complexity while retaining its elegance and energy.

Production
The Nerello Mascalese for Quota 1000 Barbabecchi comes from high‑elevation vineyards on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, where old vines are planted on steep terraces of decomposed lava, ash and basalt. This stark, well‑drained volcanic soil, combined with cool nights and intense sunlight at about 1,000 meters, yields low‑yielding grapes with remarkable aromatic precision and structure. Graci works with a deep respect for the land, favoring manual vineyard work and hand‑harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters make it to the cellar. Vinification is traditional and minimally interventionist: gentle fermentations, often with a significant proportion of whole bunches, take place with indigenous yeasts to preserve terroir expression, followed by élevage in large, neutral oak and/or concrete that polishes texture without masking the character of Etna’s unique volcanic terroir.

Food & Serving
This is a highly gastronomic wine that shines with refined, yet characterful dishes. Think roasted or grilled lamb with herbs, game birds, duck breast, or veal, as well as mushroom‑based dishes, truffle risotto, and aged, nutty cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Its freshness and fine tannins also make it an excellent partner for Sicilian classics such as caponata or dishes featuring tomatoes, olives and capers, provided the seasoning is well balanced. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and elegance. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the wine to open up and fully reveal its layered nose and precise structure.

Producer
Graci is one of the benchmark producers on Mount Etna, known for crafting terroir‑driven wines that faithfully express the extraordinary diversity of this volcanic region. Based on Etna’s northern slopes, the estate focuses primarily on indigenous varieties such as Nerello Mascalese and Carricante, embracing organic, low‑intervention farming and traditional winemaking. Rather than chasing a uniform house style, Graci highlights the nuances between different vineyards and vintages, allowing Nerello Mascalese to act as a kind of ‘chameleon’ that interprets each year and site with honesty and clarity. This commitment to authenticity and transparency in the glass has helped position Graci among the most respected names in Sicily, and a key reference for serious Etna wines worldwide.
