Description
Gourt de Mautens Blanc 2017 is a characterful white wine from one of the Southern Rhône’s most admired artisanal estates. Crafted in small quantities, it offers a striking combination of depth, freshness and texture that will appeal to serious wine lovers and collectors alike. This is not a simple, fruity white – it’s a structured, gastronomic wine built for the table and for patient cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Gourt de Mautens Blanc 2017 shows a vibrant golden hue with subtle green reflections, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is complex and layered, typically offering notes of ripe stone fruits (apricot, white peach), citrus oil, fennel and wild herbs, underscored by hints of honeycomb, almond and a gentle mineral/stone character.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet finely poised, with a rich, almost waxy texture balanced by a line of saline, mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of baked lemon, pear, and yellow plum mingle with nuances of anise, white flowers and a discreet, well-integrated oak influence (if used in the vintage). The finish is long, savory and slightly spicy, suggesting the wine will continue to gain complexity with time in bottle. 2017 has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for a decade or more from vintage, developing deeper nutty, honeyed and truffled notes with cellaring.
Production
Gourt de Mautens is based in the Southern Rhône, in and around the village of Rasteau, where sun-drenched slopes, stony soils and a Mediterranean climate create ideal conditions for characterful, low-yielding vines. The white wine is typically sourced from old parcels planted on clay-limestone and stony terraces, which help retain freshness and promote natural balance in the grapes. Harvesting is generally carried out by hand, allowing for rigorous selection of only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches. In the cellar, the approach is artisanal and minimal-intervention: gentle pressing, native yeast fermentations and élevage in a combination of tanks and, in some vintages, larger neutral barrels to add texture without overwhelming the wine with oak. The goal is to capture the purity of fruit, the signature of the terroir and a distinctive, ageworthy structure.
Food & Serving
Gourt de Mautens Blanc 2017 is a superb food wine, pairing beautifully with rich seafood dishes such as seared scallops, lobster, monkfish or grilled turbot, as well as roasted poultry, guinea fowl, veal in cream sauces, and refined vegetable dishes like truffle risotto or roasted root vegetables with herbs. It also works well with aged hard cheeses and semi-soft, washed-rind cheeses. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F): slightly cool but not too cold, to allow the aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. Decanting for 30–45 minutes before serving can help open up the bouquet and soften the wine’s youthful structure, particularly if enjoyed in its earlier years.
Producer
Domaine Gourt de Mautens is a small, highly regarded estate in the Southern Rhône, known for its meticulous, almost Burgundian approach to vineyard work and winemaking. Founded and driven by a philosophy of low yields, organic practices and minimal intervention, the domaine has earned a reputation among enthusiasts for producing some of the most characterful and terroir-driven wines in the region. While best known for its profound, ageworthy reds, Gourt de Mautens also crafts limited quantities of distinctive white wines that showcase the potential of Rhône whites for depth, complexity and longevity. The estate’s commitment to expressing its stony Rasteau terroir and its refusal to compromise on quality have made its wines highly sought after by collectors and sommeliers alike.
