Description

Gourt de Mautens 2016 in magnum format is a deeply expressive red from the Southern Rhône, crafted for those who appreciate intensity, depth and finesse in the same glass. Brimming with dark fruit, spice and a luxurious texture, it’s a bottle that makes an impression the moment it’s poured. The magnum (1.5 L) format not only elevates the sense of occasion, it also allows the wine to mature more gracefully over time.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Gourt de Mautens shows a dense, opaque ruby to garnet hue with a vibrant rim that hints at its energy and youthfulness. The nose is layered and evocative: black cherries and blackcurrants weave together with notes of crushed rock, licorice, roasted herbs and a subtle hint of garrigue. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, opulent wine that remains beautifully balanced. Ripe black fruit is wrapped in a plush, almost velvety texture, supported by fine but assertive tannins and a lively acidity that keeps everything fresh rather than heavy. Flavors of dark berries, sweet licorice, cocoa nibs and warm spices unfold gradually, leading into a long, savory finish with a touch of mineral grip. In magnum, this 2016 has excellent aging potential and should continue to evolve and gain complexity over the next 10–15 years or more, depending on storage.

Production
Gourt de Mautens is known for its meticulous approach to vineyard work in the sun-drenched, stony terroirs of the Southern Rhône, where poor, rocky soils, abundant sunshine and cooling evening breezes work together to produce concentrated, characterful fruit. Yields are typically kept very low, and grapes are harvested by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches reach the cellar. Vinification tends to be traditional and careful, often involving gentle extraction to preserve purity of fruit, followed by élevage in a mix of vessels that allows the wine’s natural power and complexity to shine without being dominated by oak. The result is a wine that speaks clearly of its terroir: dark, mineral and deeply aromatic.

Food & Serving
This rich, structured Rhône red is a superb match for hearty, flavourful dishes such as slow-braised lamb shank, beef daube, venison stews, roast duck or grilled ribeye with herb butter. It also pairs beautifully with Mediterranean-inspired cuisine—think rosemary-infused roast chicken, ratatouille, or charred vegetables with tapenade—as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F) for optimal expression. Given its youth and concentration, decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its early to mid drinking window, to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl and the tannins to soften.

Producer
Domaine Gourt de Mautens, founded by Jérôme Bressy, has earned a cult reputation among Rhône enthusiasts for its uncompromising commitment to quality and its profoundly expressive, terroir-driven wines. Situated in the Southern Rhône, the estate works predominantly with old vines and low yields, crafting wines that are both powerful and refined, with a strong sense of place. Over the years, Gourt de Mautens has become a reference point for serious, ageworthy reds from this part of France, consistently praised by critics and collectors alike for their depth, complexity and ability to age gracefully.
