Girlan Vigna Ganger Pinot Noir Mazon Riserva 2022 is a refined and beautifully structured expression of Pinot Noir from Alto Adige. Sourced from the single-vineyard cru Vigna Ganger in Mazzon, it stands out for its precision, elegance, and remarkable aging potential—a wine that reflects both the cool-climate character of the region and Girlan’s long-standing commitment to quality.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows an intense ruby-red color. The nose is fragrant and polished, with layers of cherry, sour cherry, raspberry, and a delicate hint of marzipan that adds depth and intrigue.
On the palate, the wine is persistent and graceful, driven by fresh acidity and supple tannins that give it both energy and shape. Refined spicy notes add complexity, while the overall balance suggests excellent aging potential, allowing the wine to evolve gracefully over time.
Production
The grapes come from Vigna Ganger, Girlan’s monopole vineyard in Mazzon, located at 360 to 380 meters above sea level on a gentle southwest-facing slope. The site benefits from an ideal microclimate for Pinot Noir, with topsoil rich in clay and a limestone subsoil that contributes finesse, structure, and aromatic precision. Yields are kept very low to emphasize the cru’s distinct identity.
Harvest takes place by hand in mid-September, when the grapes are fully ripe. In the cellar, part of the fruit is vinified as whole clusters before being gently transferred by gravity into stainless steel tanks. Alcoholic fermentation lasts around 25 days, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine then ages for 20 months in barrels, before spending another 18 months resting in bottle to integrate and gain harmony.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, duck breast, game birds, mushroom dishes, veal, and rich vegetarian plates such as risotto with porcini. Serve it at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for about 30 minutes if opened young to help the aromas fully раскрыться and soften the structure.
Producer
Girlan was founded in 1923 and has become one of the respected names in Alto Adige, known for wines that combine regional identity with precision and consistency. Its Vigna Ganger project, launched in 2008, highlights the potential of Mazzon’s exceptional terroir through carefully limited yields and meticulous winemaking. Under winemaker Gerhard Kofler, Girlan has earned a reputation for producing elegant, terroir-driven Pinot Noir with notable depth and aging capacity.
