Why shop with us?
Gianfranco Fino Primitivo del Salento Es is a bold, intensely expressive Primitivo that captures the warmth and character of southern Puglia with remarkable finesse. Crafted from 100% Primitivo and shaped by Gianfranco Fino’s meticulous approach, it combines power, ripeness, and elegance in a style that has made the estate one of the most respected names in the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple color that immediately signals concentration and richness. The nose is layered and inviting, with aromas of blackberry jam, blueberry, dried rose petals, dark chocolate, liquorice, damp earth, and subtle resinous, mineral, and smoky nuances.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and rounded, yet lifted by a vibrant freshness that keeps it balanced and energetic. The tannins are polished and well integrated, and the alcohol is impressively controlled for such a powerful style. It has the structure and depth to evolve gracefully over the coming years, gaining further complexity and harmony with bottle age.
Production
The vines are grown primarily in the traditional Apulian bush-vine system on red clay and limestone soils, where the proximity of the Ionian Sea and the region’s hot Mediterranean sun help produce ripe, concentrated fruit. Harvesting is done by hand, with careful selection of the bunches, which are then transported in refrigerated containers to preserve freshness. Vinification takes place with two to three weeks of skin contact in a 70-hectolitre stainless steel tank, followed by immediate transfer to French oak barrels, half new and half used, with daily bâtonnage until the first racking. After around nine months in wood, the wine is bottled unfiltered and without tartaric stabilization.
Food & Serving
This is an ideal match for rich, flavorful dishes such as grilled lamb, braised beef, game, aged hard cheeses, and hearty pasta with ragù or slow-cooked sauces. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to open up and show its full aromatic depth and structure.
Producer
Gianfranco Fino is regarded as one of Puglia’s leading producers, known for wines that express the region’s native grapes with precision, concentration, and balance. His work has helped elevate Primitivo from a rustic local specialty to a wine of serious international recognition, and his bottlings are widely admired for their purity, power, and distinctive sense of place.
