Description
Giacomo Conterno Riserva Monfortino Barolo 2008 in magnum is one of the benchmark wines of Piedmont, and a reference point for traditional, ageworthy Barolo. Sourced from the legendary Francia vineyard and crafted only in the very best years, this is a profound, tightly coiled expression of Nebbiolo built for decades in the cellar. The 2008 vintage combines Monfortino’s customary power with striking aromatic precision, making it a coveted bottle for serious collectors.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2008 Monfortino shows a deep garnet core with brick-tinged edges that hint at its slow, noble evolution. The bouquet is immediately captivating: dark cherries and blackberries are layered with rose petals, dried violets, mint, licorice, incense, tar and warm spices, gradually unfurling with air. Subtle notes of underbrush, tobacco and mineral smoke add complexity and depth.
On the palate, this is pure tension and energy. A concentrated core of dark fruit—black cherry, plum and wild berries—is framed by massive yet beautifully sculpted tannins and vibrant acidity. Flavors of menthol, crushed roses, sweet and savory spices, and a distinct tarry, ferrous minerality roll across the tongue in waves. The finish is extraordinarily long, with tannins that currently demand patience but promise superb integration over time. In magnum, the aging potential is even greater: while already compelling for those who enjoy youthful structure, it will reach its prime between roughly 2028 and 2048 and easily endure beyond that in optimal cellaring conditions.
Production
Monfortino is sourced exclusively from the Cascina Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, a high-caliber site with south and southwest exposures, limestone-clay soils, and a climate that produces Nebbiolo of great structure and intensity. The fruit is hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with ruthless selection both in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the finest clusters make it into the Riserva. Vinification follows steadfastly traditional methods: long, submerged-cap macerations and extended fermentations in large wooden vats, followed by many years of aging in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti. No shortcuts, no barrique influence—just time, patience, and minimal intervention to allow the vineyard and vintage to speak with clarity.
Food & Serving
In its youth, this 2008 Monfortino is best paired with richly flavored, structured dishes that can stand up to its tannins and intensity: slow-braised beef or veal (brasato al Barolo), lamb shanks, game birds, osso buco, or aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. As it matures and the tannins soften, it becomes a sublime partner for truffle dishes, roasted meats and refined Piedmontese cuisine. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting is strongly recommended—at least 3–4 hours for a young or mid-maturity bottle; even older bottles can benefit from a gentle, shorter decant to allow the wine to open without losing its delicate aromatics.
Producer
Founded in 1908, the Giacomo Conterno estate is one of the most revered names in Barolo and a guardian of uncompromisingly traditional winemaking. The creation of Monfortino in the early 20th century established a new standard for ageworthy Nebbiolo, and today the winery—helmed by Roberto Conterno—continues to be a leading voice for classic, terroir-driven Barolo. Based in Serralunga d’Alba, Giacomo Conterno has been instrumental in defining the region’s global reputation for profound, long-lived wines, and Monfortino is consistently counted among the world’s greatest reds, with top scores and critical acclaim across multiple decades and vintages.
