Description
Giacomo Conterno, Francia Barolo 2018 is a benchmark expression of Serralunga d’Alba Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most revered traditionalists. Sourced from the famed Francia vineyard, this Barolo is known for its power, precision, and extraordinary capacity to evolve in the cellar. The 2018 is still in its youth, revealing a linear, tightly focused character now, with the promise of unfolding into something profoundly complex over time.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Francia Barolo shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged reflections at the rim, already hinting at its classic Nebbiolo heritage. The nose is currently quite primary and restrained, opening slowly with dark cherry, wild strawberry, and blackcurrant, then progressing toward blue and violet flowers, grilled herbs, and a subtle note of warm, baked terracotta and brick.
On the palate, this is a firmly structured, linear Barolo, more about focus and tension than width at this youthful stage. The tannins are authoritative yet refined, wrapping around flavors of dark cherry, red berries, dried rose, and a delicate savory undercurrent of spice and dried herbs. The finish is long and persistent, carried by vibrant acidity and a mineral backbone that clearly speaks of Serralunga. This vintage demands patience: while already compelling, it is built for long-term aging and should gain breadth, depth, and aromatic complexity over 15–25 years, and likely well beyond in a good cellar.
Production
Francia is a steep, high-quality cru in Serralunga d’Alba, known for its poor, calcareous marl and clay-limestone soils that naturally limit yields and give Barolo of remarkable structure and minerality. Giacomo Conterno farms these vineyards meticulously, with an emphasis on low yields and careful selection to ensure only perfectly ripe Nebbiolo clusters are harvested by hand. In the cellar, the approach is staunchly traditional: extended maceration on the skins, followed by long aging in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti. This slow, oxidative élevage allows the wine to develop its hallmark depth, purity of fruit, and firm, ageworthy tannic frame without the imprint of new oak.
Food & Serving
This Barolo calls for equally noble and flavorful cuisine: think braised beef or veal shank, rich ossobuco, game dishes, truffle-infused risottos, and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino. Classic Piedmontese dishes like brasato al Barolo or tajarin with butter and white truffle are natural companions. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo stems to allow the aromas to unfurl. Given its youth and structure, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended in the next decade to soften the tannins and reveal the emerging complexity.
Producer
The Giacomo Conterno estate is one of the true icons of Barolo, synonymous with uncompromising quality and the purest expression of traditional Langhe winemaking. Founded in the early 20th century and elevated to legendary status under Giovanni and later his son Roberto Conterno, the domaine has become a reference point for ageworthy, classically styled Barolo. Based in Serralunga d’Alba, they are renowned for their mastery of great crus such as Francia and the fabled Monfortino, wines that regularly rank among the finest in Piedmont and the world. Their steadfast adherence to long macerations, extended aging in large casks, and meticulous vineyard work has cemented Giacomo Conterno’s reputation as a benchmark producer and guardian of Barolo’s historic identity.
