Description

Giacomo Conterno Barolo Francia 2017 is a benchmark expression of Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most revered estates. Sourced from the famed Francia cru in Serralunga d'Alba, this is a Barolo that marries power and depth with an almost surprising sense of purity and poise for such a warm vintage. It’s a wine for serious collectors and Nebbiolo lovers who seek a bottle that truly captures the character of the year, the vineyard, and the hand of a master grower.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Francia Barolo shows a deep, luminous garnet hue with a subtly transparent core—classic Nebbiolo, but with a darker, more saturated tone that hints at its concentration. The nose is strikingly pure and layered: black cherry and blackcurrant mingle with violet, dark plum skin, and crème de cassis, wrapped in notes of grilled rosemary, warm iron, and that distinctive “rusty nail” character. Hints of baked terracotta, red stone, and dried rose petals add a compelling, savory complexity. On the palate, the wine is both powerful and remarkably refined. The texture of the Nebbiolo is smoothed into something almost velvety yet remains firmly structured, with finely etched tannins that are authoritative but not austere. Flavors of black and red berries, licorice, and sweet spice unfold gradually, supported by a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine lively and lifted despite its considerable fruit weight. The finish is long, mineral, and detailed, suggesting outstanding aging potential—this is a Barolo built to evolve gracefully over 15–25 years, gaining even more aromatic nuance and tertiary complexity.

Production
Francia is a single, highly esteemed vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, an area known for its poor, limestone-clay soils and steep slopes that give Nebbiolo its signature structure, depth, and ageworthiness. The warm 2017 growing season demanded careful vineyard work, and Conterno’s team responded with meticulous canopy management and precise harvest timing to retain freshness while achieving full phenolic ripeness. Grapes are hand-harvested and rigorously sorted in the cellar. Fermentation traditionally takes place in large wooden vats with extended macerations to extract color, tannin, and aromatic complexity, followed by long aging in large neutral botti—allowing the vineyard and vintage character to shine without oak overshadowing the wine’s purity and terroir.

Food & Serving
This Barolo calls for refined, savory dishes that can stand up to its structure and intensity: think braised beef or veal, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, game birds, or traditional Piedmontese fare such as brasato al Barolo and tajarin with truffle. Aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano, or mature Pecorino also make excellent companions. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses to let the aromas fully open. Decanting is strongly recommended—2–3 hours for current drinking—to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s full aromatic complexity.

Producer
The Conterno name is legendary in Barolo, and Giacomo Conterno is widely regarded as one of the greatest traditional producers in the region. Founded in the early 20th century, the estate became a beacon for ageworthy, uncompromising Barolo under the stewardship of Giacomo and later his son Giovanni, who cemented the reputation of iconic cuvées like Monfortino. Today, Roberto Conterno continues this legacy with an unwavering commitment to low yields, meticulous vineyard care, and long, patient élevage in large casks. The Francia vineyard, which the estate acquired and developed into a cru bottling, has become one of Serralunga’s reference sites, and the wines regularly receive critical acclaim for their purity, balance, and extraordinary capacity to age.
