Description
Giacomo Conterno’s Francia Barbera d’Alba 2023 is a beautifully restrained take on one of Piedmont’s most expressive red grapes. Sourced from the revered Vigna Francia site, it combines lifted freshness, refined structure, and the unmistakable class that has made Giacomo Conterno a benchmark producer in Italy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2023 shows a poised, elegant profile with vibrant red cherry and plum fruit at the core. Layers of blood orange, chalk, mint, white pepper, and a subtle smoky incense note add nuance and complexity, while the overall impression remains finely tuned rather than forceful.
The palate is silk-textured and understated, with polished tannins and a clear mineral thread carrying the finish. It is a more restrained vintage for Francia Barbera, and while already appealing for its purity and balance, it should benefit from some time in bottle or cellar to fully knit together. Aging potential is strong, especially for those who appreciate a more classical, graceful expression of Barbera.
Production
This wine comes from Vigna Francia in Piedmont, a prized vineyard site long associated with precision and depth. The cool-climate conditions and mineral-rich soils help preserve Barbera’s natural freshness while shaping its finely etched structure and bright fruit profile. The 2023 vintage shows a more subdued, refined character, suggesting careful harvesting and a vinification approach aimed at purity, balance, and clarity rather than overt extraction.
Food & Serving
Serve at around 16-18°C, ideally with a short decant if drinking young to help the aromas open up. It pairs especially well with braised meats, roast duck, mushroom risotto, truffle dishes, and richer pasta preparations, as well as aged cheeses that can match its texture and fine acidity.
Producer
Giacomo Conterno is one of Piedmont’s most respected names, with a long-standing reputation for producing wines of depth, precision, and age-worthiness. The estate has played a major role in defining the classic Barolo style, and its wines are widely regarded as reference points for Italian fine wine. Francia is one of the producer’s most celebrated vineyard holdings, further strengthening the estate’s status in the region.
