Description

Giacomo Conterno Cerretta Barolo 2019 in Double Magnum (3 L) is a commanding, cellar-worthy expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barolo’s most revered traditionalists. Drawn from the Cerretta cru in Serralunga d’Alba, this wine marries muscular structure with remarkable precision and purity. Bottled in an impressive 3-liter format, it is crafted for long-term aging, special occasions, and collectors who value authentic, terroir-driven Barolo.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Cerretta Barolo shows a luminous, deep garnet core with orange-tinged rims that hint at its classic Nebbiolo character. The nose is immediately complex and evolving, with notes of sour cherry, wild strawberry, dried rose petals, violet, and blood orange, layered over cedar, licorice, iron, and a subtle hint of tobacco and dried herbs. On the palate, this Barolo is firm, focused, and finely etched, showcasing the power and minerality typical of Serralunga. Red and black cherries, pomegranate, and cranberry meet savory notes of leather, balsamic, and spice, all supported by gripping yet refined tannins and vibrant acidity. The finish is long, dry, and saline, with lingering floral and ferrous notes. In Double Magnum, the evolution is slower and more graceful than in standard bottles, giving this wine excellent aging potential—20+ years from the vintage, with its most expressive window likely from 2030 onwards.

Production
The Cerretta vineyard lies in Serralunga d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most prized and powerful communes, where marl and limestone soils and higher elevations give Nebbiolo its hallmark tension, depth, and mineral backbone. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. True to Giacomo Conterno’s traditional philosophy, fermentation takes place in large wooden vats with extended maceration to extract structure and nuance, followed by long aging in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti. The result is a wine that faithfully transmits the character of Cerretta—structured, age-worthy, and unapologetically classic—further enhanced by the slower maturation afforded by the 3-liter bottling.

Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic Barolo best paired with equally refined and flavorful dishes. Think braised beef or veal, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb shanks, game birds, truffle risotto, tajarin with rich ragù, or aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano and mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. Given its youth and structure, decanting is highly recommended—at least 2–3 hours for present drinking, and potentially longer for full aromatic bloom, especially from Double Magnum.

Producer
The Giacomo Conterno estate is one of the legendary names of Barolo, synonymous with uncompromising quality and a steadfast commitment to traditional methods. Founded in the early 20th century and elevated by Giacomo and later his son Giovanni, the estate has become an international benchmark for age-worthy, classically styled Nebbiolo. With historic cuvées like Monfortino and a reputation for meticulous vineyard work and long elevage, Conterno holds a central place in the story of Piedmontese wine. The acquisition and development of top crus such as Cerretta has only reinforced the estate’s status as a standard-bearer of Serralunga and the wider Barolo region, with its wines among the most sought-after by collectors and connoisseurs worldwide.
