Description

Giacomo Conterno Cerretta Barolo 2017 in a rare 3L double magnum is an expressive, site-driven Barolo from one of Piedmont’s most revered traditionalists. Drawn from the high-altitude Cerretta vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, this wine captures the finesse and structure that define great Nebbiolo in warm vintages. The large-format bottle further enhances its aging potential, making it a collectible centerpiece for serious Barolo lovers and special occasions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Cerretta Barolo shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged edges, typical of Nebbiolo yet vibrant and youthful. The nose is intense and finely etched: sweet red cherry and wild strawberry (fragolino) lift from the glass, supported by notes of wild rose, violet, dried herbs, and a hint of spice and mineral dust from Serralunga’s heavier soils. On the palate, this Barolo is surprisingly silky and supple for the vintage, with a long, graceful mid-palate that balances brightness and depth. Flavors of sweet cherry, red currant, pomegranate, and rose petal are framed by fine, persistent tannins that feel important yet polished, never harsh. Subtle notes of orange peel, anise, and crushed stone emerge with air. While approachable in its youth thanks to its smooth, yielding texture, the structure and concentration suggest a long life ahead, especially in double magnum, where evolution will be slower and more nuanced over 15–25 years or more.

Production
Cerretta is a high-altitude cru in Serralunga d’Alba, sitting around 400 meters above sea level on heavier, clay-rich soils that retain moisture—an advantage in warm, dry years like 2017. Vines here were planted roughly 25 years ago and are cultivated to emphasize low yields and high concentration. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve Nebbiolo’s natural acidity and aromatic detail. In classic Conterno fashion, vinification is traditional: long macerations and fermentations in large wooden vats, followed by extended aging in large neutral botti. This slow, unhurried approach allows the vineyard character and vintage to express themselves clearly, resulting in a Barolo of precision, structure, and elegance.

Food & Serving
This 2017 Cerretta Barolo pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes that complement its tannic framework and aromatic complexity: braised beef or veal (such as brasato al Barolo), lamb shanks, game birds, and slow-cooked ragù over egg pasta like tajarin or pappardelle. It also shines alongside aged hard cheeses, truffle dishes, and mushroom-based preparations. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). For current drinking, decant the wine 2–3 hours in advance—especially from double magnum—to allow the aromatics and texture to fully unfurl; older bottles or those cellared for longer will need a shorter decant, just enough to awaken the wine.

Producer
Giacomo Conterno is a benchmark name in Barolo and a standard-bearer for traditional Nebbiolo in Piedmont. Founded in the early 20th century and based in Monforte d’Alba, the estate became famous for its uncompromising style and long-lived wines, particularly the legendary Monfortino. Under the stewardship of the Conterno family, the winery has acquired top-tier crus such as Cerretta and Francia, cementing its status as one of the most respected producers in the region. Consistently awarded high critical acclaim and sought after by collectors worldwide, Giacomo Conterno stands as a reference point for pure, terroir-driven Barolo that combines power, precision, and remarkable aging capacity.
