Description
Giacomo Conterno Cerretta Barolo 2017 is a single-vineyard Barolo from one of Piedmont’s most revered traditionalists, capturing the character of a warm vintage with remarkable poise. Sourced from high-altitude vines in Serralunga d’Alba, it marries power and structure with a silken, almost yielding texture that’s rare in such a young Barolo. This is a collectible Nebbiolo that delivers both immediate pleasure and serious aging potential, showcasing why Cerretta has become one of the most talked‑about crus in recent years.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Cerretta Barolo shows a luminous garnet core with delicate brick-red hues at the rim, typical of classic Nebbiolo. The nose opens with sweet red cherry and wild strawberry (fragolino), lifted by notes of wild rose, violet and dried herbs, then deepening into hints of orange peel, spice box, anise and subtle earthy tones.
On the palate, the wine is striking for a warm year: the tannins are important yet exceptionally refined, wrapped in a smooth, silky texture that feels almost gliding. Intense red cherry, raspberry and pomegranate are layered with rose petal, blood orange, licorice and a whisper of tar and underbrush. There is a long, bright mid-palate of vivid acidity that keeps everything fresh and linear, softening any angular edges that Nebbiolo can show in its youth. The finish is beautifully persistent, with fine tannins and a lingering echo of sweet red fruit and florals. While already approachable and generous in 2017, this Barolo has the structure to evolve gracefully for 15–20 years or more in a good cellar, gaining complexity and tertiary notes of leather, truffle and dried flowers.
Production
Cerretta is located in Serralunga d’Alba at around 400 meters above sea level, on heavier clay-rich soils that retain moisture even in hot years like 2017. This combination of altitude and water-holding capacity tempers heat stress and preserves freshness in the grapes, contributing to the wine’s firm but elegant tannic backbone. Vines here were planted roughly a quarter of a century ago, now reaching a maturity that delivers low yields of concentrated Nebbiolo. Giacomo Conterno works with painstakingly careful, largely manual vineyard practices, harvesting by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe bunches are selected. In the cellar, the approach is deeply traditional: long fermentations and macerations on the skins to fully extract Nebbiolo’s aroma and structure, followed by extended aging in large, neutral botti (large Slavonian oak casks). This slow, oxidative élevage allows the wine to knit together naturally, without overt oak imprint, resulting in a Barolo that is both powerful and profoundly transparent to its terroir.
Food & Serving
Cerretta Barolo 2017 is a superb partner for rich, savory dishes that match its structure and aromatic complexity. Think Piedmontese classics such as tajarin with white truffle, braised veal cheek, ossobuco, or brasato al Barolo, as well as game birds, roast lamb, mushroom risotto and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo glasses to allow the bouquet to unfurl. Decanting is highly recommended: 2–3 hours before serving will help the tannins soften and the full spectrum of floral and red-fruited aromas to emerge, though even longer aeration can be beneficial if enjoyed in its youth.
Producer
The estate of Giacomo Conterno is one of the true benchmarks of Barolo, renowned worldwide for its unwavering commitment to traditional methods and terroir-driven wines. Founded in the early 20th century and based in Monforte d’Alba, the winery became legendary with its Monfortino Barolo, a cuvée that helped define what great, long-lived Barolo could be. Under the stewardship of successive generations, particularly Giovanni and later Roberto Conterno, the estate has expanded its holdings in top crus such as Francia and Cerretta, cementing its status as a reference point in Serralunga d’Alba and beyond. Conterno’s wines regularly receive top accolades from major international critics and are prized by collectors for their purity, longevity and faithful expression of site, making each vintage release a significant event in the world of fine wine.
