Giacomo Conterno’s Barolo Francia is a single-vineyard Nebbiolo from Cascina Francia in Serralunga d’Alba, presented here in a magnum format that is well suited to long-term cellaring. A benchmark bottling from one of Barolo’s most respected estates, it reflects the traditional character of its vineyard and the importance of Serralunga in the region’s history.
Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show Nebbiolo’s characteristic garnet hue, with aromas of red fruit, rose and spice alongside the mineral notes associated with Cascina Francia’s limestone-rich soils. On the palate, expect a structured, persistent style, with firm tannins and a savoury, saline impression.
Its concentration and tannic structure suggest considerable potential to develop in bottle. The magnum format can encourage a slower evolution, though exact drinking windows will depend on storage conditions and the character of this vintage.
Production
The Cascina Francia vineyard lies in Serralunga d’Alba, in the Langhe, where limestone-rich soils and a well-ventilated microclimate shape the Nebbiolo. The ripe grapes are crushed and destemmed, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks without added yeast, with three or four daily pump-overs; malolactic fermentation follows. The wine is aged for 48 months in 500-litre tonneaux, then bottled for a further period of maturation before release. The harvesting method is not specified.
Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C with a little time to open up. It should pair well with braised beef, roast lamb, game, or dishes featuring porcini and other earthy mushrooms. Decanting for one to two hours can help a young bottle reveal its aromas; older bottles may benefit from gentler handling and a shorter decant.
Producer
Giacomo Conterno is a family-run estate in the Barolo region, widely associated with traditional Nebbiolo and Serralunga d’Alba. Its wines, including the celebrated Monfortino, have helped establish the producer’s reputation among collectors and Barolo enthusiasts. The Francia vineyard bottling is one of the estate’s key expressions of a specific site.
