Description
Giacomo Conterno Arione Nebbiolo d'Alba 2021 brings the legendary Barolo producer’s precision and depth to a more immediately approachable expression of Nebbiolo. Sourced from the esteemed Arione vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, this wine captures the power, perfume and fine structure that have made this site famous. It offers a chance to experience the Conterno style in a fresher, earlier-drinking form, without compromising on character or authenticity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Arione Nebbiolo d’Alba shows a luminous, medium ruby core with garnet reflections toward the rim—classic Nebbiolo color, combining delicacy with intensity. The nose opens with vivid red cherries, wild strawberries and pomegranate, followed by notes of rose petals, violet, sweet spices, and a subtle hint of licorice and crushed stone. As it breathes, more savory complexity emerges—dried herbs, a touch of tobacco and a whisper of tar.
On the palate, it is focused and finely etched, with a lively, mouthwatering acidity and beautifully woven tannins that are firm yet refined. Flavors of red currant, cherry and blood orange are layered with spice, tea leaf, and mineral undertones, giving a sense of tension and length rather than weight. The finish is long, precise and saline, suggesting excellent balance. While crafted to be more accessible in youth than the estate’s Barolo, this 2021 has the structure to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years under good cellaring conditions.
Production
Arione is a high-profile Serralunga d’Alba vineyard, rooted in calcareous marl and sandstone that give Nebbiolo its hallmark combination of perfume, grip and minerality. The continental climate of Piedmont—warm days and cool nights—helps preserve acidity and aromatic lift in the grapes. At Giacomo Conterno, grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit is used. Vinification follows the estate’s traditional philosophy: fermentation with extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and nuance, using indigenous yeasts where possible, followed by maturation in large neutral oak botti to respect the purity of Nebbiolo and the character of Arione’s terroir. The result is a wine that clearly speaks of place while remaining supple enough to enjoy earlier than the estate’s flagship Barolo bottlings.
Food & Serving
This Nebbiolo d’Alba is a versatile partner at the table, particularly with Piedmontese and northern Italian cuisine. It pairs beautifully with tajarin pasta with ragù, risotto with porcini mushrooms, truffle dishes, roasted poultry, pork loin, grilled lamb chops and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Tome. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance; avoid serving too warm, which can accentuate alcohol and tannin. A gentle decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended in its youth to allow the bouquet to open and the tannins to soften, though careful pouring from the bottle will also reward patient swirling in the glass.
Producer
Giacomo Conterno is one of the most revered names in Piedmont and a benchmark for traditional Barolo worldwide. Founded in the early 20th century, the estate gained legendary status under Giovanni and later Roberto Conterno, who became guardians of a classic, uncompromising style based on long macerations, aging in large botti and an unwavering focus on vineyard expression. With iconic crus such as Cascina Francia and Arione, the domaine helped define the notion of single-vineyard Barolo and set a standard for purity and longevity. Today, Giacomo Conterno remains a reference point in the region, consistently producing some of Italy’s most sought-after Nebbiolo-based wines, celebrated by collectors and critics for their depth, precision and extraordinary aging potential.
